Do I collect my kids from Suffolk for 1 week?

After mixed instructions the government said children can move between separated homes. But it reads like if they're close not opposite ends of the country...

The Government has reiterated that such travelling is regarded as ‘essential’ for the purposes of the lockdown. As far as distance goes, in many ways, driving in your car for 4 hours doesn’t pose any greater risk than driving across town for 20 minutes.

Of course, particularly with children, the issue might be the need to make stops. You’d need to think whether there’s a way of doing that which maintains social distancing (at least between others and your family).

potentially spreading the virus over a too large distance I am afraid

Only danger i can see apart from the obvious is, the longer you’re on the road, the more chance of an accident, potentially taking an, ambulance, and then hospital staff.

You do realise that the purpose of these measures is to reduce the number of contacts between individuals, not ‘lock’ the virus into certain areas? Now I realise that the two things often go hand in hand, but it is the number of contacts (and hence the potential to spread virus) which matters here.

Neither you or I live Mr Holgate’s life, nor know the effect not spending time with him would have on his children’s well-being. I’m just advising him of the Government’s own advice on the issue, plus highlighting some practical issues to take into account.

Yes, but how much are they worth?

Now the serious answer. I do not have children or grandchildren. So I am in no way an expert.

However, if you care for and love your grandchildren, you do whatever you can to protect them and youselves. So you can see each other on the other side of this horrible situation.

Wait until tomorrow - they'll have changed their mind as to what the "instruction" is

Seeing your kids is essential for you and them - if you and their household haven’t had symptoms go get them

They and/or their family members could be carrying the virus without showing symptoms.

Use Skype or something similar until you are all deemed to be safe to meet.
