Djed Spence leaves Nottingham Forest fans in awe with 'amazing' Sheffield United display [Post]

I honestly detest Trees and their arrogant fans - but on the pitch, Steve Cooper and his players have come together out of adversity. They were on their arz, just hoping to stop the drop - but I wouldnt be surprised if the overtake us. Grabban was "burnt out", the team were a bunch of "selfish money-grabbers" and fans have been depressed and angry for many years - because Cloughie isnt taking them into Europe and Wembley every year.

Goodness help us when we play them in the New Year.

But look at the transformation. It really pzzs me off when we look at whats happening to us.

Nottingham Forest player ratings v Sheffield United - Spence shines as Grabban rescues point

Nottingham Forest again came from behind to clinch a result as they drew 1-1 with Sheffield United at the City Ground.

Lewis Grabban came off the bench to rescue a point for his side, after Morgan Gibbs-White had given the Blades the lead in the second half.

With Max Lowe ineligible to play against his parent club, Steve Cooper made two changes to his starting line-up as James Garner and Lyle Taylor came into the XI.

The latter replaced Grabban up front while Garner came into the midfield, with Jack Colback the man to take up the left wing-back spot in Lowe’s absence.

The midfielder has played left-back before in his career, and settled into the role well early on.

An open start to the game saw both sides showing attacking intent. The hosts created the better chances as they grew into the first half, but United did have them on the back foot at times with lengthy spells of possession.

Joe Lolley wasn’t too far away from giving the Reds an early lead when he fired wide from the edge of the area in the 12th minute, following a powerful break forward.

And Taylor followed him in going close to breaking the deadlock midway through the first period. A teasing corner from James Garner was met first-time by the striker, but he poked the ball just past the post from a few yards out.

After a Brennan Johnson effort was deflected into the arms of Robin Olsen, Brice Samba was called upon for the first time as the interval neared.

Enda Stevens’ through-ball was latched on to by Jayden Bogle in the box. The angle was tight, but it the Reds stopper still needed to save with his feet at the near post to keep it out.

It came on the back of a period of pressure from the visitors. However, Forest ended the opening 45 minutes strongly and almost nicked a lead right at the death.

Another dangerous Garner corner found Joe Worrall, who sent a glancing header narrowly beyond the far upright to leave it all square at the break.

The second half started quietly, but Johnson was left fuming in the 69th minute. The youngster argued he should have had a penalty when felled by Chris Basham, but was instead booked for diving.

It proved something of a turning point as the Blades took the lead less than 10 minutes later.

A low cross from Billy Sharp was slotted in by Gibbs-White, leaving the Reds once again in need of a late goal to get something from the game.

They did just that.

In the 83rd minute, Grabban was there to force the ball home from Johnson’s cross to make it 1-1.

Both teams pushed for a winner, but it ended all-square on the banks of the Trent.

Here’s how Reds reporter Sarah Clapson rated the Forest players at the City Ground.

Brice Samba: The visitors didn’t test him too often, but made a couple of saves when required. Opener was a disappointing one to concede as was a little too easy for the Blades. Rating: 6/10

Joe Worrall: Defence generally coped pretty well, even when the visitors applied the pressure. Led by example wearing the armband, making some important tackles. Rating: 7/10

Tobias Figueiredo: Had a decent game as the back three worked well together, limiting United’s clear-cut chances. Could occasionally have picked his passes better, but otherwise didn’t do much wrong. Rating: 7/10

Scott McKenna: Typically reliable at the back. And took it upon himself to push forward at times, trying to get his team going. Comfortable on the ball whenever he did edge out of his own half. Rating: 7.5/10

Djed Spence: A constant threat down the right side. Made some brilliant, probing runs - including one where he twisted his way into the penalty area. Chipped in with a great tackle at the other end, too. Superb all night. Rating: 8.5/10

James Garner: Put in some tasty corners, which Forest couldn’t quite make the most of. Found it tough when it came to the midfield battle, though. Rating: 6/10

Ryan Yates: Really coming into his own in midfield now. Wasn’t always easy as the Blades pressed, but worked tirelessly - even when he took a knock. Rating: 7.5/10

Jack Colback: Drafted into the left wing-back role in Max Lowe’s absence. Not entirely unfamiliar territory for him, and coped well defensively. A little quieter when it came to pushing forward. Rating: 7/10

Joe Lolley: Evening ended with the winger thumping the ground in frustration when a foul wasn’t given as he worked his way into a good position. Summed things up a bit. Worked hard and had moments where he threatened, but couldn’t quite force a breakthrough. Rating: 6/10

Lyle Taylor: No shortage of effort. Didn’t have a great deal to work with, other than going close from a first half corner. Just needed better hold-up play. Rating: 6/10

Brennan Johnson: Was absolutely livid when he was booked for diving, when it looked like he had been brought down in the area. Worked some promising openings, but didn’t get much change out of the referee. Rating: 7/10

Subs

Philip Zinckernagel (for Lolley, 57mins): Looked lively when he came on, trying to put the Blades on the back foot. Rating: 6.5/10

Lewis Grabban (for Taylor, 63mins): What an impact sub. In the right place to force home the equaliser and add to his tally for the season so far. Rating: 7.5/10

Alex Mighten (for Figueiredo, 79mins): Tried to cause the Blades problems. Perhaps just needed better decision-making. Rating: 6/10

Subs not used: Horvath, Carvalho, Bong, Ojeda.

Better than we have going forward? Can't agree with that. I'd rather see any of Tav, Hernandez, Watmore and especially Jones on the right side attacking for us.
I'd rather Tav was given a rest at the moment.

Loaning Spence out to a club who are a rival to Boro especially when he is playing well and Boro are scratching about for defenders is turning out to be a bit of a blunder.

I think it's definitely the management. Warnock's thing, and I'm not knocking it, is getting the best out of limited players. Proven it time and again.

Getting the best out of talented players though, not sure that's a strength. Probably partly the reason he's never cracked the premier League.

It's been said many a time on here, many of the players aren't a good fit for Warnock. Payero, Tav, Sporar, Hernandez...... they are all clearly very talented and much better than they're currently showing. The manager seems incapable of using them effectively though.

I do agree with that. But I'd still have him over Spence at RW.

Was he playing well before he went? Pretty useless last season from what I recall. I'd guess we thought we were getting one more fullback in before the transfer deadline and that it somehow fell through.

Spence will always be the same: wildly inconsistent. He started like a house on fire for us under Woodgate and Warnock in that first season, and looked overexposed and weak defensively in the second. Far from the finished article, if Forest fans are still talking like this come March then we need to worry.
Maybe he's developed and grown as a player given that he has a few years experience of championship football behind him now? He is far from the finished article, but you could see he was improving.

Spence clearly isn't happy here and has (or his agent) been pushing for a move for a long time. If he does well at Forest it's only good news for us and we might get a big bid from a PL Team in Jan. Not many have the physical attributes he does.

Would've been professional and very sensible to make sure we had the replacements in before letting Spence and Coulson go. That bizarre decision has really come back to bite us!

I am pleased Spence has progressed at Forest. He was not getting 8.5 rating for us and needed a change. If his value goes up that helps us he imporves and returns to play for us.

Remember we got him on a free from Fulham.

"Coulson is finally getting praise wearing the blue shirt of Ipswich too.
Mmmmmm"

Roofie - Coulson was subbed last night in the 22nd minute when Ipswich were 1-0 down. I would guess he is injured again.

In an ideal world he would have been playing at this level for us. But he wasn't. So this loan is working out better for us than him just rotting in the reserves or leaving for peanuts. We either get him back as a better player or he's sold but for decent money.

Yes.
And.....?

Coulson has had a frustrating time since arriving on loan in August. He tested positive for Covid and was forced to self-isolate and then, after winning a place in the side and impressing at left-back he sustained a thigh injury that kept him on the sidelines until the weekend, when he returned to action in the 2-1 defeat at league leaders Plymouth.

“It was bad timing, wasn’t it?” smiled the Gateshead-born player. “But that’s football and you can’t predict anything that’s going to happen tomorrow.

“It’s just one of those things and it’s just good to be back playing now, settled in and ready to go again on Tuesday at Wycombe if selected.

“No player likes to be out injured but the rehab went well and I’ve been back in training for a couple of weeks and it’s been really good. It’s great to be fit and involved again and getting the last-minute goal against Fleetwood, to make it back to back wins, was a good feeling for everyone at the club.

For NW to complain that Boro were bullied and capitulated in the second half against Luton seems a bit rich after we got rid of Morsy who was signed to add a "bit of muscle" to the side ?

We shouldn't be getting bullied with the likes of Crooks, Howson, McNair, Bamba. It's just more excuses.
