Why Djed Spence threw his arms up in frustration during Tottenham training yesterday
By Milo Clay.Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence is being put through his paces by Antonio Conte and his staff after completing his switch from Middlesbrough this summer.
And Spence was spotted throwing his arms up in the air in frustration during a Spurs training session yesterday after he had a goal disallowed.
The 21-year-old is just the latest addition to Conte’s squad and the sixth player to come through the door at Spurs.
And it seems that the former Boro man is settling in quickly at Hotspur Way as he adjusts to life in North London.
Djed Spence in Tottenham training
In the club’s YouTube video of yesterday’s training session, Spence threw his arms up in annoyance after seemingly having a goal disallowed. The Spurs squad were playing mini-games during training and the full-back was put through on goal by Cristian Romero.
He was closed down by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg but finished brilliantly into the far bottom corner, showing his attacking qualities.
But Spence was then left displeased as the coaching staff looked to have ruled out his effort and he had no problem showing his frustrations.
Spence’s finishing is a good sign for Conte
Despite his goal being disallowed, it will be encouraging for Conte to see Spence making the most of these types of opportunities on the right-hand side.Last season, Emerson Royal often made little use of encouraging openings and the Italian will want to see his wing-backs create more opportunities, as well as scoring more goals.
Matt Doherty had more success in an attacking sense but Spence will be looking to force his way into the Spurs team after making the switch from the Championship.
The England U21 International put up decent numbers for Nottingham Forest last season as he managed three goals and five assists under Steve Cooper.
Spence was brilliant for Forest during their promotion-winning season and put in some notable displays in the FA Cup against Leicester City and Arsenal.
The full-back will certainly bring energy and dynamism to Conte’s side but the Italian will be hoping the youngster can offer more end product in the final third than Royal.
