You can't switch off or you will pay the price, and if multiple players switch off in the same phase then it will be a heavy price. Their break wasn't lucky, it was good play, from an attacking side with some good players. Albeit it was easy for them and shocking from us, and ultimately resulted in one chance which was a practical certain goal. This is worth far more than loads of much smaller chances.
The hull goals would not have likely went in, had they not been deflected, so who got awarded the goal is irrelevant, it's more that it was reliant on luck, not really our doing, but like I say the chances we had deserved the win. It's the same way that some deflections we've conceded would not have went in, had we had some luck.
I'm not unhappy with what we're doing with the squad we have ended up with, but the point is I wasn't unhappy before either really, and things are still largely the same on the pitch. It's still the same squad now scoring more as we've got Chuba back (which is a stroke of luck, none of us expected), and it's still poor at giving away daft fouls in our own half, which we know we're extremely poor at defending. It's no longer a daft foul, if the defending is that bad, it might as well be a corner or treat the foul like giving up a good chance at goal, as ultimately this is how a lot are ending up.
A agree, we will end up around mid-table, I'm thinking somewhere between 7th and 10th, but I think this is where we would have ended up with Wilder also, with this squad . The chances we were creating and giving away indicated we should have even been higher than that, and would have been if we had chuba back (or a striker who could put the ball in the net).
We really need to do something about the free kicks we give away, or defending set pieces, or tracking of runs though, if we fix one of those problems then ultimately the chain of events which leads to conceded goals will break down. We will be 100% aware of this mind, we just need to fix it. Or we just accept that risk, and hope we outscore the opposition, but I'm not sure we can do that unless the finishing from those other than chuba improves.
We're at no risk of the drop, and we're not going up, so we need to concentrate on/ build foundations for next year now. We still need another striker and a centre mid, and we're going to have to find replacements for Giles, Steffen and Howson, as none of them will be here next year. Giving hackney games this year should lessen the need for a centre mid, as he could be real quality, especially next year, but we still need another as Howson will be a year older.
