Defence today

The defence had much more protection because we had to play a lot of the game out of possession. I don’t envisage us playing that way again very often this season. Great display but remains to be seen whether we’ll have more of that defensive balance when we go back to our more expansive, possession based game.

I think there were few interesting tactical tweaks.

Fry would stick to the striker.
Howson would pull in to a centre back position at times while howson would push and press more.

This would at times allow space "in between the lines" when they broke the press but they panicked less because they had a good back line that was difficult to pass through.

We also allowed Faes the ball as the person to bring it up with Greenwood more focused inside to stop them playing through the middle - knowing that he wasn't fast or skilled enough to get away even with a lot of space.

Almost all their chances came from when they improved their press and we made bad decisions.

Brilliant defensive display by the whole team. Shout out for Izzy who helped RVB several times against Mavididi.
The only time we really looked like conceding was between 70 to 80 min where we tried to set up 3 goals for Leicester with poor balls across our back line
Yes worth mentioning your second paragraph, I was amazed we got away with that given the opposition.

With Clarke on the bench now, once Lenihan is fit the manager will have a real selection headache, of the good sort. Still prefer Dijksteel at right back mind.

VDB was outstanding yesterday. There will be some games that suit Dijksteel more though.

A lot of people phoning into BBC Tees seemed to agree with you. But for me Mavididi and even their fullback had him on toast too many times.

Nah. He was excellent. See if the Leicester fans think they had him on toast. They certainly never reading their board. He was my man of the match.

I thought RVDB had a good game yesterday but on his own Mavididi was a little too much for him. Fortunately Izzy Jones was outstanding out of possession. Between the two of them, we looked really solid down that flank.
