Reading the obituary of the Guardian football correspodent, and the mention of his report of the famous North Korea WC win at AP, "Boro crowd reacted like they had won the FA Cup", I am wondering whether he was also the author of the following intro to a report of an MFC match, that I remember (paraphrased) -

"With the single white hoop on their red shirts. Middlesbrough look like a Rugby League team. With a back four of Craggs,
Boam, Maddren and Spraggon, they sound like one"

The full report was I remember complimentary

I remember that quote, though not which journo it was. I always thought it unfair and lazy.
Another referred to Boro's 'onomatopoeic back four'. He he!

An the time of Jack Charlton's side, here was a nationwide fanzine called 'Foul'. They had a competition to pick a league side with unusual names (it was of it's time, wouldn't do it now). One entrant consisted of the whole Boro side, but with Trevor Womble (Rotherham) substituted for David Mills.
