David Hodgson made his 2nd Boro debut this day 1987

Well-known member
His 1st debut, 23rd September 1978 away to Forest in a 2-2 draw, wearing the No12 shirt on & replacing Tony McAndrew in the 2nd half

Roll on 9 years later, on the 3rd March 1987 Bruce Rioch brought DH back for a 3 game loan from Norwich City, for this top of the table midweek 3rd division match away to Bournemouth & becoming Boro's 5th loaned signing & 2nd outfield player

Unfortuantly, the result didnt go our way as we suffered a 3-1 defeat & with it, our 1st back to back away defeats of the season after losing to Swindon 1-0 on the previous saturday

Bruce's team

Stephen Pears
Gary Hamilton
Colin Cooper
Tony Mowbray
Gary Parkinson
Gary Pallister
Bernie Slaven
Archie Stephens
Paul Kerr
Alan Kernaghan
David Hodgson

Sub - Stuart Ripley - Missed only one game all season & 1st sub appearence of the season

What was Gary Parkinson like? Think I have heard all about all the rest in that team as players but not really heard what Parky was like as a player

Right I'm back now,
Gary Parkinson was at Everton as a junior but became home sick so, IIRC, asked to be released & joined the Boro in early 1986, later making his debut at 'home' to Port Vale when we played at Pools

He was a solid defender who will be forever remembered as part of the 86-87 legends team
He continued his development as the Boro went from strength to strength, a very athletic, fit, reliable defender, who was very rarely caught out of position, or overrun IMHO

Again, IMHO, as 1st division teams worked on us Parky started to struggle as we unluckily fought against relegation, a good solid pro who played for a number of clubs, Bolton, Blackpool, Preston, until his unfortunate accident

Not only a member of the 86-88 team, he played for the Boro in our 1st ever Wembley appearences & part of the squad that won promotion to the 1st ever PL season
I use to compare him to Phil Neville, not the same level wise mind, he scored a scorcher aay to Everton of all clubs for his 1st Boro goal, then our penalty taker

When he was at Blackpool I sent him some of my press photos to sign, which he gladly signed & sent back to me

Thanks for the summary . Nice comparison to P Nev haha

Maybe Gibson wanted to tap into Hodgson’s football knowledge for his next step what ever that maybe 😀

Not sure if he’s still an agent at all
