Darlington - Food

Hi, I'm off to the Darlington Hippodrome tomorrow evening and was thinking of going for something to eat before and are looking for recommendations. I don't know Darlington that well and was looking for recommendations.

My thought was to sit down for around 3.30 - 4pm and need to be at the Hippodrome for a 7.30 performance start.

I did look at the Tawny Owl just outside of Darlington, but are willing to look at anything between Middlesbrough and Darlington.

If you like Thai food there is a Thai restaurant opposite the civic/hippodrome which is very good. Pizza, none better than Stable Hearth in Duke Street. Indian, you are spoiled for choice, I like Cafe Spice in Clarke's Yard. There are the usual chains in town, Bella Italia, Nandos etc

Neither of us enjoys Thai food. Although I am sure the food is nice, I always get left with a taste of fairy liquid from the lemongrass.

Devonport Middleton One Row but it is a 10-15 minute drive from the theatre
Old Farmhouse food is OK but not brilliant
In town there's there's The Oven on Duke Street - mainly British food but decent value
Stable Hearth for Pizza is also in Duke Street
Una Momento near House of Fraser (Frasers now I think)

I'd ring the Devonport / Old Farmhouse as their opening hours for food can be a bit hit & miss

Have you ever been to the Tawny Owl?

I was looking at that earlier, is it far to walk to the theatre?
It's a bit of a walk as the theatre is on Yarm road just down from the train station, and you have to cross the A167 and then walk up into town
say 10/15 minutes depending on walking speed and where you have parked (under the VUE cinema is popular)

Yeah, sometimes good but I always feel some dishes have been packaged / microwaved - it's not terrible though

We both love Tapas but I think the walk and crossing the road the main road is the issue. The wife is still feeling the effects from Pneumonia earlier this year and her lung function is pretty poor at the moment. I have a feeling she will be coughing throughout the performance.

I think I will look at one of the pubs and then drive to the theatre.

All of these are good recommendations.

Dont go to the Old Farmhouse or Tawny owl, they are both part of the vintage inn chain and are really average.

If you are a proper foodie then either would leave you disappointed.

Devonport is far better than both.

Old Farmhouse was great until they were taken over by them but it went downhill after and the quality of the food dropped off a lot.
