Daily mail headline 1 m is enough

Big splash on tomorrow’s front page

I said a few days ago that this would be the next red line to go and it’s the daily heil that appears to be leading the clarion call.

“Senior Conservative MPs are urging Boris Johnson to consider changing the 2m social distancing rule to 1.5m, amid fears for the hospitality sector.
Greg Clark, chair of the Commons science committee, told the Daily Telegraph it could "be the difference between people being able to go to work and losing their jobs".
Former Chancellor Lord Lamont said measures which could "compensate", such as face masks, should be considered.” -bbc news

All this as senior tories think this would allow more businesses to open And this is despite scientific evidence Stating on the
that -

“ Sage reported that being exposed for six seconds at 1m is comparable to a one-minute exposure at 2m.”

Drip feed us the information so it gets as little attention as possible once it actually happens. If it wasnt real life it would be laughable, governments actions over the last few weeks especially make a second wave feel pretty inevitable.

I can’t see why 1m is worth the risk? If we can’t hug and shake hands shouldn’t we just be giving each other as much room as possible?

The bbc story was from 2 days ago, It was more of a rumour story but it looks like my fear was true and they are trying to remove this red line as we all know 1M might as well no exist. As that is barely An arms length.

I don't know what the difference of 2m without a mask or 1m with a mask would be? Not every country has 2m. Germany is 1.5m with masks and they seem to be doing ok. The WHO recommends 1m and scandinavian countries are at 1m.

I don't have an opinion on what is right. I don't think there have been enough studies to determine what a safe distance is. Ideally we would have the lowest distance that is still safe, whatever that may be.

2m is extremely prohibitive of any kind of normality. Our shops, businesses, pavements etc aren't designed to have such big gaps between people. Public transport is impossible to use and we'd need to quadruple the number of schools and offices to fit everyone in safely.

Good.

1 metre distance is how every restaurant in the country has its tables set out as.
These businesses simply cannot afford to take half, sometimes three quarters of these tables out and open the doors to the public when the time comes. There would be zero point in opening. If it stays at 2 metres say goodbye to,

Micropubs, not sustainable with 5 customers.
Majority of bars in major towns and cities.
Most restaurants that aren't backed by a chain or in a popular spot.
Days out at theme parks, they will have to seriously reduce admission numbers this causing peak days to be sold out. Would most likely have to book on advance.
Swimming pools and gyms will struggle to open.
High streets will die out completely, who wants to queue to go into a shop when it's raining outside when you can order literally anything now off of the internet? Nobody is queuing to 'window shop' with a 2 metre rule.
Train carriages are only 2.8 metres wide on average, how does 2 metre social distancing work on a train, remember that's in front, to the side and behind. No profit to be made taking seats out of one side of and entire carriage.
Live music? How are you supposed to enjoy live music in a room where people are forced to stand 2 metres apart?

Why 2 metres? Where's the science? WHO says 1 metre. Rumours that it's 2 metres because Whitty and Valance reckon the British public would not know what 1 metre is so may aswell make it 2 metres. Why isn't it 10 metres? An uncovered cough or sneeze reaches 8 metres.

From the op
“ Sage reported that being exposed for six seconds at 1m is comparable to a one-minute exposure at 2m.”

It will also allow a hell of a lot more MPs back in to parliament to to sit and cheer behind Boris, although I’m sure that’s just a coincidence.

Why 2 metres? Where's the science? WHO says 1 metre. Rumours that it's 2 metres because Whitty and Valance...
It's all to do with probability and data modelling. I'll just make up these numbers to illustrate the principle.

At 10m from an infected person your chance of being infected is 0.001%, pretty unlikely
At 2m from the same infected person it's 5%
At 1m 10%

So you pump those numbers into the big number grinder and you predict how reducing the "safe distance" will affect the R rate. Of course none of us have seen the real numbers and even if we did we don't have access to the modelling software that the Government is using. So all we can go on is what they tell us, which would be fine if they had a record of making good timely decisions that have kept us largely safe throughout this pandemic...

Interesting this one. I didn't realise so many other countries had smaller social distancing gaps. As Muttley says it's not a complete safety net at any distance, merely a reduction in the chances of getting the virus. Funny how two of the nations with the least effective, must poorly planned out lockdowns (of those that locked down) The US and the UK seem to have the two biggest social distancing gaps. Of course the US has no concept of a metre so they are using 6 foot, which is closer to 2m than 1m

1 in 1000 chance of catching it now anyway.

A lot of this is almost hyperbole.

1 metre or 2 metres.

The answer is whether you value health, well-being and the safety of both yourselves and others or whether you prioritise making money and/or having a good social life in the next few months.

Personally I am happy to wait. I dare say most that are happy to go to 1M now and start living a more normal life sound the sort of person that may be more likely to think about themselves more than they think or care about their fellow human beings. I doubt they’ll think too much about the safety of others and are probably less likely to keep to social distancing rules whatever distance is imposed. I would guess they’ll feel their personal risk is much lower than average so sod it if there are a few more casualties along the way, well, its no biggy so long as me and mine are ok

They'd like the rule modified for the HOC so they can get the Tory benches packed with cheerers and jeerers so it resembles the Eton debating society that the pm can play to instead of addressing issues.
