Cycling : UCI Ban Super Tuck and “Puppy Paws” Position.

The UCI have banned the use of the super tuck position and also the puppy paws position I.e resting forearms on the handle bars as practiced by rolleurs leading out a peleton

“Riders must observe the standard position as defined by article 1.3.008. Sitting on the bicycle's top tube is prohibited. Furthermore, using the forearms as a point of support on the handelbar is prohibited except in time-trials.'

That position, a favourite particularly of breakaway riders, involves assuming a time-trial position without anything for the hands to hold onto. Recently, it helped Marc Hirschi and Alex Dowsett to enormous breakaway wins in the Tour de France and Giro d'Italia respectively.”

Thats sad. Always for me added the excitement to cycling Seeing them in the super tuck position.

Yes the super tuck will be banned from April 1st. The idea being it prevents amateurs trying to emulate the pros And crashing due to poor bike handling. Video.

The forearms on handlebars position is more controversial in that not many really do this unless grinding it out in front on a long stint at the front of the peleton. I don’t see the danger in that myself.

Proving conclusively that lorry drivers ain't all bad. I think you cyclists owe them an apology. ;)

I think the UCI want riders in near full control with the ability to apply the brakes immediately to cut down on some of the mishaps/crashes that occur.

That is a good thing but the vast majority of bad crashes that occur in pro cycling do not involve these tuck positions.

Exactly, what about Ewan's sprinting style as an example, which is as dangerous, if not more so, than the super tuck given it's done in a much more congested bunch sprint whereas the super tuck is generally done downhill where there is a bigger gap between riders.

Indeed. Also Groenewegen’s aggressive riding in sprints that ended Jakobsens season in 2020.

Banning 'puppy paws'. Really? That's daft. I don't see how they can do that. Especially when you're talking about riders doing 120+ miles a day for three weeks at a time. Changing position is natural thing to do for comfort, and arguably more important for health & safety than banning a position. Don't think i've ever seen a crash causes by resting forearms on bar tops.

Nor me. I have rarely seen any amateur cyclist do it either (or even descend on the top tube as people don't want to die)
