Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 so in their (Russian) eyes its theirs now. Why hasn't Putin reacted the way he is now to the attacks by the Ukrainians on Crimea....by trying to land grab with these elections in Donbas and Luhask he is now threatening the nuclear option by saying they will defend Russian territory ( Donbas and Luhask) as an attack on the ^Motherland^

Maybe they'll rig the vote to reject being Russian, meaning that he can heroically withdraw because they're respecting democracy and the will of the people, who surprisingly don't want to buddy up with the friendly looters and pillagers who liberated them by turning their cities into Fallujah tribute acts.

I suspect they wont need to rig the vote to get that result?

I was wondering the same thing.. Gives Putin away out without losing Faith and been the good guy in His eyes.

Doubt that’s his mind set though

Be a lot of egg on faces if that happened as most nations are saying they won't recognise the referendum results.
