Joe Root has a win percentage of 42.18 per cent as England Test captain, only Mike Brearley (58.06 per cent) and Michael Vaughan (50.98 per cent) have better win rates than Root (figure is based on a minimum 30 tests as captain). He had a great record until the last year of his captaincy (his win rate was actually up to 64% before this) when he was basically carrying the whole batting line up and he still managed to score 1,708 runs in the calender year with two double centuries and four more hundreds as he was named ICC men’s cricketer of the year.
 
Actually just found that Strauss had win ratio of 48% as well but for some reason he wasn't mentioned in the records.
