Cramp at night.

Last couple of weeks I’ve been getting leg cramp during the night. I quickly stand up and stretch and it does go but can be very painful. Different locations but shins is popular at moment.

Anyone suffer from them? Any good remedies?

I’ve had issues with my back so appreciate it could be the nerve damage or my general fitness causing them. I find it I go for a walk on an evening I rarely get them so maybe that is the answer.

UTB.

A friend of mine use to suffer with cramp, not at night but in general life.

If remember correctly , as mentioned above , but also potassium (think from bananas 🍌) and apologies either to much or not enough salt contributes to this. Can’t remember which way around it is

I'll chuck in calcium too - that potassium and magnesium citrate will help, another good shout is electrolytes that can be obtained from coconut water.

My dad suffers terrible with cramp. He’s had all kinds of tests and they can’t pin point it to anything. He takes quinine supplements but swears by drinking tonic water before he goes to bed.

In the last few years I’ve started getting cramp more and more, and although I put it down it age, I do wonder if it’s something hereditary. Sometimes it’s agony, in places like the shins, and there’s not a lot you can do in the middle of the night. I haven’t quite got to the supplements or tonic water before bed just yet, but don’t think I’m far away.

What’s your salt intake like?

I used to suffer a fair bit from shin cramp and it turned out I wasn’t eating enough salt. If you’re active then get the salt in where you can, using electrolyte sachets helped too, it really alleviates cramp.

I get calf cramp occasionally but brutally when it pings, often after I've been on rower or bike, not rehydrating enough is what I'm thinking..

I did both my Achilles and thought the cramp (which I get occasionally) was to do with those. The physio suggested it's partly down to drinking and consequent lack of hydration

  • Sodium
  • Potassium
  • Calcium
  • Magnesium
  • Fluid intake
  • Carbohydrate intake
  • Body temperature regulation
Keep on top of these above which is your composition and cramp should become a non issue, maintaining your sodium levels is key and I would recommend investing in some electrolyte sachets which you can buy from Holland and Barrett for £7 for 20.
