Love the tenuous link to Man United there. Why not say that you just want to follow a big club who win trophies and don't want to go through the highs and lows with your local club? Each to their own I guess, but watching YOUR team win a trophy, get to a major European final, rather than the 'sitting in your arm chair, watching yet another title win' hundreds of miles away fan, this actually means something.

It's always the 'uncle' . I've met a few folk in York (when I lived there) who all claimed they followed Leeds and not York due to an 'Uncle'.
It's never bottom-feeder teams either.

I know it's petty and there are probably some decent glory supporters but when i find out they're -for example - a Man United fan from Hartlepool with only the most tenuous of links then it really put me off them as a person.

Yep how can they relate

I love the oh but I supported Liverpool when they were rubbish ....

err yes must be awful that like

Thing is, if we all did this, there'd only be half a dozen times out there. It's not easy following your team. Most teams out there will lose more often than win, be relegated, let us down, miss out on a striker, promise the world but fail to deliver. But WHEN you do put a good team together and win something and see players like Juninho playing for YOUR club, it's a million times sweeter.

I have so much respect for people who follow the Rochdales and Grimsbys of this world; who queue up in the cold and rain to watch and travel far and wide. They're the real heroes... the true supporters. Not someone from Saltburn who supports Man United because his uncle did.
