Cow run over by police, twice

That cow is only young man it's not very old it's defenceless would understand if it was a rampaging bull but it isn't
It's a young lady, or hieffer more likely.

However it is absolute nonsense to suggest cows attack thousands of people every year. Dear me.

No idea what happened before, BUT it doesn't look distressed, it doesn't look aggressive, I don't understand why there was any need for it? Most cows are pretty easy to get them to go where you want with some food, just need a bit of rope and tie them round a lamppost till help arrives.

If it was a lion that would probably do more damage would they run it over no but because its a cow they think they can do whatever they need to do get it off the road

you do raise a point the police aren't well trained enough to handle situations like this they should be taught how to handle animals
Some of them are, but can't have every one of them doing everything etc, loads of them won't have had training for things which are more common occurrences every day, as they won't have the time or budget. Also, a day away from the front lines/ the beat, training for a 1 in 10,000 event is probably not seen as good value to most.

I imagine they are probably are trained to briefly risk assess and then mitigate risk, and minimising risk to personnel is always going to come first.

I reckon they would stand a better chance if there was more of them mind, I imagine solving a situation like this often needs more numbers, and equipment and quickly, but I bet there was zero chance they had access to that.

The footage looks awful, poor creature. We don’t know the full context but it seems totally out of order.

Surrey police issued a statement… they tried various ways to subdue the cow and felt this was a last resort to protect public and property (a car had been damaged)
Regardless if it’s justified or a measured response, the optics again are terrible…

The calf has a cut leg and is back on its farm now apparently 🐮
Not sure why the police ended up using a car to try and stop it but I imagine the steaks were high 👶

Surrey Police closing ranks to cover incompetence I suspect.

You are right awful optics. The video looks like law enforcement trying to kill a defenceless animal who happened to wander from a nearby field.

You generally can't toss a rope round a cows neck and lead it. You can guide them with a stick or food but you wouldn't expect a police officer to know how to deal with a cow. Phoning a vet or the rspca should have been their first action.

Or an effin farmer.

When I was in the military and deployed to any UK training areas such as otterburn or Brecon. The local farmers would always let their wildlife roam free or they would purposely kill an older/sick sheep or a cow and bill the army for the animal.

Common practice, I’m not saying that is the case here though.

Poor thing, very distressing, and looks bang out of order.

Cows do attack thousands of people in the UK each year though, and I bet the likelihood goes up when they're in a situation like this. The cow could have easily hurt or killed someone, or caused a car crash etc.

Putting myself in their position, I'm not quite sure what else the police were meant to do, there was probably only one or two of them and they had tried other methods before doing that apparently.

There's absolutely zero chance of being able to get a cow to go where you want it to in a car, especially as a novice. One or two coppers have absolutely zero chance of keeping an eye on the cow, and also keeping the public out of the way ahead of it also.

Would anyone else go one v one with a cow and a set of hand cuffs? I certainly wouldn't , and not for 30k a year. Same as horses and I've seen a lot of cops put themselves in the danger zone with those, and it's not their job to do that.

Wouldn't have been put in this situation if the farmer had done his job.
you really can't defend what they have done to that poor animal it had been ongoing for a couple of hrs apparently, why didn't they call in a vet or whoever to tranquilize it?

its only what id expect, if the driver thinks that was an acceptable way to deal with the situation, then hes clearly in the wrong job, he needs sacking
