Covid & school children - what we've known all along.

All people, from baby to OAP - all carry & pass the virus on....

"I’ve been hearing a lot about how children are more infectious now and contribute to transmission because of the B.1.1.7 variant,” Deepti Gurdasani, an epidemiologist and doctor at Queen Mary University in London, tweeted last week. But, she adds, it’s "a myth” that children weren’t transmitting the disease earlier, and it’s time "to lay this to rest.”

Gurdasani told DER SPIEGEL that the evidence is clear. "It's clear from evidence across the globe and within the UK that schools have contributed significantly to community transmission,"

Tories and ONS caned for misuse of statistics on schools’ Covid threat

Watchdog criticises lack of clarity and context

The UK Statistics Authority’s (UKSA) has written to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) suggesting risks associated with different occupations lacked clarity and context to be used properly.

It also wrapped ONS over the knuckles for failing to respond properly to concerns raised about its analysis on schools – which was ‘misinterpreted’ by the Tories to falsely claim schools were safe:

Teachers and other school staff have now been shown to have suffered far higher infection rates than the general population.

For months the Tories claimed there was no greater risk.

Deaths will certainly have occurred as a result of the misrepresented data, among school staff, pupils, their families and in the wider population, as schools drove the second and third waves of the pandemic higher.

The Tories have not published data on deaths among school staff since June, when nearly 200 had died.

It’s not just the UK. Switzerland and several other countries have believed for most of the pandemic that babies and pre-schoolers don’t transmit, based on their own research.

I’m slowly coming to the conclusion that there is “research” and “supporting evidence” somewhere out there in the world to support virtually any theory whatsoever about this virus. Such that the global population simply don’t have a F***ing clue what is going on.

Totally agree with your second para. You can pick the science to fit your preconceptions.

Schools never going back then yeah?

How old do my kids need to be to start work?

I really don’t think anyone knows Randy. It is getting really scary as the virus learns to evolve. It will do so beyond the working safety of these new vaccines, that seems clear enough. Yearly tweaks to vaccines for all will seem inevitable. Please don’t take the following as patronising, it is seriously not meant to be ........... The best things for anyones kids right now is for their parents to put their own current personal safety and that of their kids above the understandable worry about all their futures. The world that we once knew has gone, hopefully not forever, but humanity will find a way in the future to overcome such worries, only the here and now actually really matters, we obviously live our lives in the present not the future. I for one have given up planning for months ahead, let alone years.

We all knew that schools were infection vectors and that the government were lying about it, didn't we?

I think most were very suspicious of the governments insistence that it was safe if properly managed. But as stated above the UK were not alone in their misreading of the available data.

Sometimes common sense trumps science. The magic bullet theory, multi verse theory, wave, particle duality. If kids can catch it they can spread it. I have no doubt that the government deliberately interpreted the data they way they wanted to, either because they believe education is very important or to get people back to the office.

No argument from me - just as sometimes very clever people have no common sense - and I've worked with a few.

No one [as far as can be seen on this thread] suggests "never going back" to school.
We will have to quickly get up to speed being more creative in teaching kids.
Big School "factories" arent the only way.
we know that online is one tool which can be used.
we provide meals and support to Keyworker kids and poor kids.
We have facilities all over local areas where Teachers can direct and supervise children.
There needs to be an urgent heads-together.
Yes children need continuity - but right now all we have seen is politicians contradicting themselves and hundreds of kids and teachers being sent home with covid symptoms and being told to self - isolate.

Online isnt working for my 4 year old mate and that's with me been able devote all my time towards because I'm still sat on furlough. I dread to think what it's like for other parents who are having to work from home AND educate the children using Teams for example.
Yes I'm sure online learning is easier the older kids are but for kids of lower primary school age it's like trying to push water up a hill.

Simple fact is the unions are going to be all over this and will probably rally for schools to be closed for the rest of school year.

Or you could lobby your MP and get teachers the vaccine.

Edit: I haven't been off since the lockdown and are face to face with kids who are going out on night every day.
Literally no point in writing to an MP because all you get is a copy and paste reply.
Plus when we constantly told the vaccine might not prevent the spread of the virus what's the point?

What's the point? My wife is 62, is working in school with early years kids and is not allowed to wear any PPE. The point is the vaccine will protect her and might save her life. Teachers and staff want to keep schools open, contrary to what the right wing, teacher bashing, dog whistle press might say, so lets protect them, eh?

You missed my point. It's a waste of time writing to MP's as at the moment they are doing what they want when they want.

Your wife is towards the top of the list anyways due to her age isn't she? Aren't over 60's part of the four priority groups?

Over 70s are priority 4. Over 60s are priority 7.

This line kind of insinuates that if the vaccine doesn't stop the spread then what's the point of vaccinating school staff as a priority. My point is that there is also a 'personal protection' aspect to vaccination as well as the wider effects in the community at large.

I get what you are saying but I'm a firm believer that the vaccine stops the spread, I can't wrap my head around the fact billions upon billions of dollars have been spent on something that wouldn't stop it spreading.
