Covid - Being forced to work in the office

The chores were my only job prior to this i was getting up at lunch time watching SKY Sports News til it looped round then having lunch and going for a walk around Knaresborough then emptying the dishwasher and getting the polish and hover out before the gf got in from work.

I needed to get out of this routine. The one good thing about working from 'home' is i can do it at my mams (where i am today in boro) or work from my partners in Knaresborough but i'll need some notice to come into the office!

At least i might appreciate what a weekend is again, but theyll be no office banter about football or talking about last nights TV or getting to know the people im working with properly. Ive been told it'll all be TEAMS meetings which obviously is the norm. The COVID procedures for office working are way OTT but understandable its all risk assessments, yet you can walk into a Supermarket and mix with people and share the same toilet facilities!

I do a couple of things to make working from home more palatable, it's worth mentioning that I have always worked about 50% of the time at home so the investment was worth it for me.

Firstly get up early,a s you would to go to work. So I am up at 7am. Get showered and dressed as if you're going to work and have breakfast and coffee.

I have a home office with a largish desk and a (important) comfy chair. It's in the converted loft so away from family noise.

I leave the office to make coffee and have lunch only.

I do find it hard not to browse the internet this site etc, but I do that if I am in the office anyway, if I have time.

It's a mindset. I find I get more work done at home than the office, generally, but if you are starting a new job, ask for a buddy who can help you through the first couple of weeks with your IT issues and finding stuff on the company intranet, time sheets, that kind of thing. Don't be afraid to ask for help, most folks love showing how clever they are and will be only too glad to help out.

Best of luck with the new job.

Apologies for the hi jack ... Im in the opposite boat been out of work over 14 months. Started a temporary admin assignmemt today at Wilton (what a maze of a place that is) theyre giving me a laptop, scanner and printer so i can work from home. I know jack $hit about this job im used to the comfort of having someone at the next desk or office when i get stuck, theyll be minimal training once my IT stuff arrives hopefully tomorrow (sat for 3 hours today twiddling my thumbs until they realised no laptop would be happening today and said have an extended lunch).

How easy or hard is it working from home, i noticed in the office today there's no radio (i cant work without background noise) my worry is the tv will go on once something like Cheltenham comes round or the Darts, how do you stop yourself from this (apart from take the plug off the TV haha)
Set up an office station, even if you fold it up at night. Get up and work office hours including lunchtime. Discipline is your key. I always hated it, if I needed to work weekends I’d even drive to the office.

Was in and out of Wilton HQ for over thirty years and still get lost 😁

Don't underplay the fact that if you have worked from home since Jan, presumably productively, then under current guidelines they will have a tough job suddenly determining, and more importantly justifying, that you can't do your job from home any longer and have to be in the office. If you can WFH, you should is the current protocol, your directors are not legally in a position to amend govt guidance. It would do you no harm to prove it is obvious that their position has changed basically because of sour grapes on their part. If you can fathom out how to show that is demonstrably the case, rather than just inferred, all the better
