Anybody watching the opening ceremony. Bit bitty. Some good some bad. An impressive mechanical bull stolen the show so far. Currently the 72 nations are parading in.

Off to Birmingham tomorrow for 10 days. Cricket Rugby Athletics Beach Volleyball Swimming Netball. Can't wait it's going to be great.
When you're in a city where there is a major event it has a buzz everywhere you go!

I am going down to see 1 day of athletics, Mrs Steer also watching the netball. Looking forward to it.

Went to Uni in Birmingham and still in the area, always surprises me how relatively poor the music scene has been compared to say Sheffield, Liverpool or Manchester. Like Duran Duran and thought they gave it a good go last night, Nick Rhodes hasn't aged well, but John Taylor still probably tries to pull the birds on Broad Street and I wonder if Simon still goes sailing?!

Birmingham in the 60s and 70s was a hotbed of musical creativity. Ivy League, The Fortunes, Spencer Davis Group, Moody Blues and then came the folk scene with Joan Armatrading and of course The Move, Roy Wood ELO in the 70s. Heavy rock bands Black Sabbath, Led Zepp.

Prob true to say it fell away (and Birmingham did go through a poor time 80s and 90s economically) despite the odd successes like The Editors. The Bhangra scene is obv a big thing. With the regeneration in Brum maybe we will see a continued revival. But generally I agree Liverpool, Manchester and Sheffield have probably produced more artists.
