Cole Palmer or Phil Foden?

Foden has a balance and control that is almost unique and given what he's won already as part of arguably the best club side in world football over the last 5 years, its an easy choice at the moment.

But CP is younger and at an earlier stage on his career, so he's going to get better for sure, but he's going to have to be more than exceptional to better Fodens talent.

Give Palmer a few more seasons yet then compare the two but at the moment I’d say Foden. Either way it’s great for England.

Can I just say both are far better than Grealish who was pathetic when he came on sub yesterday.
No end product and would rather get a free kick from a dive than an assist for a goal.

Not comparable at the moment.

Foden by a long shot. But who's to say in a couple of years.

I'm guessing the OP is a wee bit tongue in cheek ;)

Grealish reminds me of downing when he came back to Boro. Playing with in himself and just keeping the ball rather than getting at defenders. The Aston Villa Jack Grealish has long gone unfortunately.

I know who I’d rather have on my penalties!

Foden is way more proven at present. But as I’ve always said, he is a very good player, but I don’t think he’ll ever be England’s (or even City’s) main talisman. He’s just not that kind of player.

He has also never really pulled up trees for England. Some decent performances, sure, but nothing in the match-winning category that I can recall especially.

They were talking about this on Football Weekly last week. Doku appears to have all the freedom to skin players and be himself, yet Pep never seemed to give Grealish the same liberties.

Yeah he’s certainly not the same player. It’s a shame as the talent is there but Doku is certainly more the exciting watch. Imagine he will make the position his now. Although thought he was disappointing yesterday.

He is younger but only by just under 2 years. It’s easy to forget how young Foden is with all the trophies he’s won and how long he’s been around.

I was goingto say the same thing. Foden is a very good player but he never seems to be the player that dictates the game. He'll never be City's best player. When they need something to happen it is players like KDB or Rodri which step up. Foden is interchangeable with any of their other attackers. He's obviously a very good player to even be in that group and he does do some excellent things but I don't think they'd miss him if he wasn't available. England is the same. He's good enough to start for England but he isn't an automatic first choice.

I haven't seen enough of Palmer. He does seem like the sort of player that is used to being the centre of attention and could be a team's focus but he probably isn't as good as Foden. I think the fact Pep allowed him to go probably tells the story well enough.

I don't think Foden will have the same kind of career as Bellingham. Someone once compared Foden to Scholes on here, which I think is fair, but he's another one who was a very good player in a very good club side, but never pulled up for trees for England and was never first choice in his best position. Foden is in the same boat, with Saka often being preferred etc.

He doesn’t have the physical attributes Bellingham has. I think Scholes is a fairer comparison as he’s a player who links play and dictates the pace of the game while chipping in with a few goals and making everyone around him better. His versatility and size mean he has played wide a lot but his best position is as a centre mid where he can pass and move and make things happen.

Well my point was he won't have the same kind of 'talismanic' career was my point. He will always be a good 'supporting' cast member in my opinion. He won't go down as one of the best ever, or even England's best ever, and certainly not City's. But he IS a very good player.

He is the same height as Andres Iniesta by the way.

Foden

Remarkable talent.
He isn't running the play for City (yet) he doesn't have to..... they have De Bruyne (over 30) and Rodri (27).

Still learning and, at 23, could be scary in a few years time.

Palmer - lets see how he progresses, but could be really exciting too.

Foden would walk into every team in the land.

It's to his detriment that he fits into Pep's system so well, but yesterday he was who they turned to for some creativity. Once KDB goes he is city's main man.

Now that Chelsea's crazy run of penalties have dried up...and so has Palmer's returns....can we all agree that this question was a ridiculous one?
I think Foden was definitely the better player when it was asked (but with the advantage of a few years of 1st team football ahead of Palmer) and he still is but I think Palmer has proven himself more since the question was asked than Foden has. Not the Foden hasn't been great, he has been recently, but Palmer hasn't dropped off. He's had several goals and assists in the last few games, including a few against us, and he's playing in a much worse team than Foden is. When the question was first asked it was almost a bit ridiculous that Palmer would be considered anywhere near Foden's level but now I don't think it's an unreasonable comparison with Foden still ahead but the margin is smaller.

I have them both in my Fantasy Footy team and they are both doing well. I wouldn't write Palmer off because he had a bad game yesterday (if he did, I didn't really watch it).
