ITV have confirmed that Clive has gone down to Comm 2.

Sam Matterface is promoted from Dancing in ice to comm 1

Big news....

I like Clive, seen his post on insta he’s absolutely gutted. Hopefully, BBC, Sky or BT pick him up. He is a way better than commentator than Matterface so seems to be a strange one

This does seem a surprising decision and I do like Clive's commentary. However he came across as a right arrogant sod on the Quickly Kevin podcast recently, I was surprised by him. However, I suppose as he said during the interview you have to have a bit of ego about you to want to be up there running the show and dictating to everyone, Motty is similar.

I might be wrong but I always get the impression that Matterface is just winging it and hasn't really done the preparation beforehand like the old masters.

Can you Put the podcast up, would be interested in listening to that at some point. I follow Clive on insta and he seems a lovely and funny fella but would be interested to see if he is how you say. What type of stuff was he saying mate?

I think every commentator and pundit has a shelf life, and often have to be removed like a barnacle from the bottom of a boat - can't think of too many who have stepped down to make way for new talent of their own accord.

Talent gets them to the top, and then ego chips away at their self awareness and they end up thinking the football match is about them.

I've never liked him as a commentator so can't say I will be sad to see/hear the back of him. It's daft but I think his commentary of England and the big Champions League games made me stop being an England fan. That era in the early to mid 00's made me really dislike the big teams and their players (and therefore the England players) and it's his voice that I associate with that.

The biggest thing that annoyed me about him was it was obvious he was always trying to come up with a new catchphrase. I don't think you should really notice the commentator, they should be background but he always acted like we were listening to him and the football was on instead of the other way round. I have no opinion on Sam Matterface which is how it should be because I've definitely heard his commentary.

Agree. I do like him but he is now 65 and time to step aside and let someone younger do it. Happened to Motson and Davies - well it happens to them all eventually. Matterface has come up through the ranks - main radio commentator with Talksport from a number of years.

I’m not really sure what the story is here? I just saw his video linked on Twitter and whilst it’s sad for him to be removed as lead commentator, it’s odd he felt he had to clarify that it wasn’t at his request. It’s just not that important. Or am I missing something?

I agree really. Nothing against him personally but i always got the impression he was trying to work in some kind of epic memorable words of his own rather than letting the big occasions speak for themselves. His commentries are a bit over the top in my opinion. Bad news for him, but doesn't this happens in other jobs with people getting promoted/demoted, and he's had a good crack at it.

Slow news day?

Not your not missing anything, he has an inflated opinion of himself that he thinks he had to clarify it

Here's a link to the podcast

He talked about saying to his producer before a big game when she tried to give him some advice, something like stop banging on, the worst thing that'll happen is I **** up (said in a way like, I never **** up so it'll be fine). He did apologise to her for swearing afterwards.

Also was going on about how he needs the hour before kick off to relax and get in the zone and that it's 'his time' and he gets really hacked off if his boss asks him to do something during that hour and messes with his routine. Also mentions a couple of times during his stories about how good he is at commentating and how a lot of his mates are now footballers (name drop etc).

Also slagged off Kenneth Wolstenholme's 1966 World Cup winning commentary saying the famous line was a fluke and the rest of it was rubbish.

Perhaps I'm being harsh and he's just very confident at what he does (which I suppose he has to be) as he did also say a few times how lucky he was and what a privilege it is to do his job. Had a few good stories to tell too about ******* Fergie off, making a first impression on Clough at Forest and recording the FIFA game commentary.

Seems a bit of a larger than life character who clearly loves the game so I can well understand him feeling gutted to have been passed over for Matterface. However, as some others have said on this thread the fact he felt the need to post a video addressing it could be seen as he thinks it's all about him, as if no one would quite believe that he'd been demoted if he didn't speak out and clarify.

I would actually say that Barry Davies is one of the few who stepped aside at the top of the game.

But Motson, Alan Green, Andy Gray, Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson, would just not leave once the game moved on past them.

Apropos of nothing in particular, Matterface is married to Natalie Sawyer......good work, Sir. 👏👏👏

Really? Not that I follow tabloid title tattle much but I thought they were together when they both worked at Sky Sports News and then they split up.

I'd echo the good work comment and even insert a 'very' before it, if true!

You are correct! So I guess I best get a haircut and my aftershave out. Hang on Natalie, I’m on my way. (If only I’d known sooner...)

If wiki is to be believed they divorced in 2014 and she started dating footballer Jonathan Douglas. Her and Matterface had a child they called Sawyer Matterface. That has to be a dodgy wind up edit surely?!!!

I should just add though that if I bump into Kirsty Gallagher on the way over I’ll not be arriving.

Never thought of looking on Wiki, relied purely on a jealous memory...
