Chuck Yeager dies

I didn’t know he was still alive. Got to respect those test pilots. Let’s take an untested machine higher and faster than anything has gone before!

Someone who, in mid-career you wouldn't have bet on to live a long life. Recommend 'The Right Stuff' (book or film).

Great book. The parts when he was a test pilot, when the plane was on th brink of disintegration, and he just kept reading out the numbers and state of the plane in a calm slow West Virginia drawl.
Apparently at the time every American airline pilot adopted that mannerism when talking to passengers.

He definitely had "the right stuff". RIP

It is interesting to remember that the UK was years ahead of the USA in research into transonic aircraft. We signed a deal to "share research" with the USA and after we handed over our research the US reneged on the deal and never handed over anything. The information we gave them enabled them to solve the handling problems on Yeager's Bell X-1 aircraft which once "modified" bore a striking resemblance to the Miles M.52 experimental aircraft. Special Relationship indeed...

That’s a name I haven’t heard in a while. He was a legend when I was growing up, a big inspiration for my career path. I also remember playing a Chuck Yeager game on a C64 when I was a kid.
