Chris Kamara on Bill Gates

Never met Bill Gates the footballer, but did meet Bill Gates the Microsoft mogul many years back when they opened a MIcrosoft centre near Reading. As a strange coincidence my daughter was the meet & greet ambassador for Cambridge union for her final year and met him too - she has the framed photo's.
I sat next to him on a transatlantic BA flight in the 90s. We never spoke a word to each other apart from hello when we I first sat down.

Didn't Willie Maddren have a Sports Shop in Teesside Park in 1992?

I would expect Bill Gates sold out to a National Chain about that time - JJB etc.

The Dundas Arcade shop used to have latest Boro score in its window on a Saturday afternoon.

I miss the local sports shops - Sports Direct and JD Sports are so boring.

I Believe, that apart from being a centre back,he was also the accountant for the club.
Deffo had his head screwed on

he was a qualified accountant but nothing to do with the club. he was in the 1st team at 16yo and he kept on studying while playing football so he had something to fall back on, not knowing he was going to be the club's luckiest beneficiary many years later

Really? He was quite chatty with me and daughter also said he talked a lot - maybe he is more reserved when flying?
Probably down to me then. I worked in the IT industry. I was a bit star struck I think. I spent the flight thinking about how I pitch for a job with Microsoft.

I remember Frank Spraggon working as assistant in the sports shop in Dundas Arcade. Or someone who looked like him. Can't remember if it was Bill Gates' shop. I think George Smith had a sports shop in Marske?
Gates lived in our neighbourhood when he was playing, even though it was mainly working class. That could never happen nowadays.
George Smith did indeed have a sports shop in Marske. When it opened he had Boro players there: the shop was rammed with folk trying to get Hickton’s, Smith’s and Gates’ autographs. Bill Gates also lived in Marske. My mum taught his kids. He was always very personable, she says.

Bill Gates benefitted from having a testimonial match at exactly the right time and good luck to him for that. We had just won the second division and played Leeds at Ayresome in full of an absolutely packed house. It was like an FA Cup QF. (Finished 4-4 IIRC).
Billed the 'match of the champions', cos Leeds had just won the first division.
Also, there was the Jack Charlton connection.
