Chelsea - Team & Tactics without Jones

This is a big test from MC with such a lack of pace in the team without Jones (and Latte Lath, Bangura and Djiksteel). I trust he'll have something up his sleeve as we can't just sit back like Rotherham did with 11 behind the ball (can we?).

Glover

VDB, Fry, Clarke, Engel

Howson Barlaser

Forss Rogers Hackney

Coburn

Or do you get Crooks in there somehow? Rogers over on the right and put Forss up top? We need to give ourselves some way of changing it too if we do go 1-0 down early on.

Carrick wasn't ruling out Jones yesterday - or Howson. It might be a case of it was too early to tell with Jones as of yesterday, or he may be keeping Chelsea guessing.
Also, when I put up my Q and A about Forss he makes it clear where he thinks he is most effective. Coming in from the left.

I'd be surprised if we dont play 3 CB's, even without Jones.

Potential for Engel or O'Brien to slot in at RWB? bit of a stretch and will not have anything close to the attacking intent, but a solid performers.

Big Anf back?

If everyone is fit.

-------VDB----Fry----Clark
Jones---Howson--Barlaser--Engel
------Crooks-----Hackney
------------Rogers----------

If Jones is out, then I think Forss comes in for Jones.

If Howson is out, as well, then unless O'Brien can start that game, then Coburn might have to be risked

If Jones is out, I don’t think we have any other option than to play a back 4.

The team pretty much picks itself.

VDB, Fry, Clarke, Engel at the back. I think all 3 of Barlaser, Hackney and Howson will start. Rogers will start. Then it’s just two from Coburn / Crooks / Forss

I can't see Jones being fit. Carrick never gives anything away but you don't go off with a hamstring injury on Saturday and make it fully fit for Tuesday.

Having said that, Forss for is a great replacement and he always puts the graft in when we are going the other way. He also is more clinical in front of goal than Jones.

3 centre backs and a rammed midfield for me.. We need to do to Chelsea what Rotherham have done to us twice!

Whose gonna play right wing back ?

Did Forss not doing it once or twice last season or am I just making that up!?!? I think he has the ability to do it if needs be.

Whatever formation we play we will be sitting deep as we were in the home leg as Chelsea really struggled against a low press but we just need the right bodies in the right places for the quick breakouts when they come along.
How about 4141 formation
VDB, Fry, Clarke, Engel
Howson
Forss Barlaser Crooks Hackney
Coburn
Replace Crooks with Rogers (and maybe swap Coburn for Crooks depending on Coburn's fitness) and that may work with Howson dropping back into a 5 when Chelsea have the ball.

We don't have much choice do we? It will be a flat back 9 of whoever is fit, with O'Brian, McNair and a load of kids on the bench. Hackney and Rodgers to be counter attacking outlets (assuming Jones is not back).

He might. I think Crooks has looked to be slightly off the boil in terms of form. Having said that, he (along with all the others) ran himself into the ground in the 1st leg, and more of the same needed here.

Crooks should definitely start.

Ive never seen Forss play coming in from the left.

Ive gone from we can get a draw to getting beat 5 nil overnight! Got to remember they beat preston 4-0 despite preston playing well first half. I think we should park the bus. Chelsea struggle against teams that sit back...we need to frustrate them no open end to end game for me would be naive.

Not 100% sure it is a hamstring injury.

Carrick said:

"We’re hoping that will be a bit of a nerve or neuro problem rather than a muscle injury, but at this stage we don’t know."
