Charlie Hurley

Irish International Charley Hurley was a real football playing centre half and I can remember being in the Ayresome Park “Bob-End’ when Boro with Brian Clough at centre forward played Sunderland in season 1960/61.

The only goal of the game came when Hurley got possession of the ball about 5 yards out from keeper Peter Wakeham. Clough had been chasing the ball but turned his back on Hurley and feigned disinterest now that Sunderland had possession.
Hurley rolled a back pass to his keeper, but Clough turned full circle, ran past Hurley and robbed the keeper passing the ball into the net.
Boro finished 5th that season.
RIP Charlie Hurley.

I remember looking at the ratings in the Sunday papers when he played for Sunderland and he seemed to be MOTM with 9/10 every game. As mentioned he was only reason we got Dickie Rooks as there was no way he was ever going to displace Charlie Hurley in the Sunderland team - he was a true legend.

One of my Grandad’s favourites. He was from near Durham and grew up in the era pre-hooliganism when it was ok to like all north east clubs.

Probably frequented St James, Roker and Ayresome in equal measures throughout his life. Used to love hearing the stories about Charlie Hurley, Len Shackleton (and others).

I should add he used to do a great impression of the generic Sunderland fan who used to want Charlie to boot it into the crowd.
