"You`ve got to have that fire inside yourself"

"Progress" was a word Michael Carrick repeatedly emphasised in his Media Conference on Monday. He could see the improvement in the team from day one. Of the Bristol game he said "...at the end we all went home a little bit frustrated, but, nevertheless [with] a little bit of a spring in our step [about] the performance and a little bit excited about whats to come...". "I`m not one thats all about performance and playing a certain way.....you cant just go down one route....you have to do whatever it takes to win the game" Thats refreshing to hear as fans. Carrick said previously, he looks at playing to individual strengths and not just sticking rigidly to a system.

Focus?

"The big focus is on us....to try to get better as quickly as we can" Whover Boro play he will "tweak" the team accordingly. "Its not the case of same again" - so dont be surprised if there are subtle changes to tactics and approach to individual games. Asked about sticking to a "back four" he replied "we defend as a team, not just a back four". Clearly its about players attacking and defending together. What matters right now is building spirit in the team and "winning games". What about the league table? "I look at the table after the new year", He acknowledged that fans and others will look at the league table - because "its what people talk about".
We have to be "physically and mentally prepared" [for the next challenge]. In an interview with BBC Tees he described "progress" as "bit by bit" "step by step". The team will find a way to win "even if its ugly".

Happy with Progress?

"I`ve been happy from the start. I really have. From the very first training session I could see how good the boys were, how good the attitude was and how much of a team and a squad we are".
"At this moment in time, we are quite happy with the way its going....but not satisfied". Michael clearly knows what he wants from the players and the standards he expects. It was interesting when he said "its amazing how quick you can get to know players..." and how quickly they can learn new tactics and ways of approaching their play. "Its about people. relationships...yes they are my players", but they all have different things going on in their lives. He stressed that all players cant expect to be treated the same way. Each is individual and need "firing up" in different ways. Not everyone is at the top of their game at the same time. For players to be at the top of their game "you`ve got to have that fire inside yourself......" to be stubborn and want to win. He added "I never got too carried away as a player"...never got too down. At the end of the day "you have to be yourself".

What was his assessment of his new role?

"Yeah. Of course I`m learning. Its a new position, but we feel things are under control. We`ve been pretty calm. Things have been organised. We are quite clear how we go about things, so its not been....like a whirlwind".
