Carragher ranting on players going down with a fake head injury

He's spot on, it really annoys me when players do this.

A Villa player just went down holding his head as West Ham were on the attack, meaning the ref had to stop the game. Was obvious there was nothing wrong with him.

I wish something could be done about this. Should make a rule to say if you go down holding your head and you don't get back up after so long then you have to be substituted. If it's a head injury players should be taken off as a precaution anyway.

No easy answer players playing the system..

Let physios on in game & stop only if - injured team - regain possession.. outfield play would be ok but if defender went down in own box it's a bit stuffed ( & this is where it mainly happens)

Problem is when it's a genuine head injury, though rolling around tends to indicate not that serious..

They could also allow a trainer on while play continues like Rugby league, when its outside the box of the defending team. Let the decision for that be up to the 4th official. The player having to go off as soon as treatment given.

Difference is in rugby it's a slower game, the game takes longer to go from one side of the pitch to the other, in football you can go from one side of the pitch to the other in seconds, physios are generally safer from the game in rugby

Easy one for me, a head injury needs a concussion assessment of three/four minutes with the physio. The player can be subbed in that time but not allowed back on to the field of play till the time has elapsed. Normal injuries, let the physio on and get on with the game (probably not in 18 yard box like), the injured player and physios are considered as active for offsides etc. though.

I think that would have an enormous effect on reducing it. I'd also add a review of 'head injury stoppages' after the game, if it is clear there is no actual contact with the players head, then it's an automatic one match ban. I'd do this for diving too.

Zaniolo clearly was faking it and his manager should punish him but of course he wont.

You have to have sympathy with refs because if they do ignore it and it does turn out to be serious he would get into serious trouble. That said players who cry wolf should be punished retrospectively

Agree about the refs.
These are players deliberately cheating by taking advantage of the ref’s duty of care.
It’s a funny one isn’t it?
Rare for football but there appears unanimity that it should be stamped out.

I can understand the feeling that if someone complains of a head injury they should be removed from the field of play for assessment/substitution but could this not lead to players ignoring head injuries in order to stay on the pitch?

I’m sure the Coventry keeper did this a couple of times in the playoffs second leg, really winds me up.

Keepers do it a lot because they aren’t made to leave the pitch and come back on again.

Serious head injuries are so vanishingly rare that there should be no mandate to stop play.

Any player claiming a head injury should be required to be subbed. If they've used all subs already, then play with 10.

It's a charter for cheating in a game that's already full of cheating.
Serious head injuries are a commonplace feature of the game. They're not always obvious, however. We're belatedly beginning to pay attention to it. I doubt we'll allow heading in 20 years.

Player goes off with head injury, mandatory 10 minute concussion protocol.

VAR can look at whether there was contact or not; if not 1 game ban.

Player repeats the head injury cheating, then the concussion protocol becomes more serious - can't play for 14 days. Can't be too careful can we?

The ref did try to expect a bit of revenge in lgnoring the “injured” player when he wanted to come back on.

Didn't see the incident, but could that not have been him just following correct current guidelines?

From this season, the referee is expected to wait at least 30 seconds from play restarting to allow a player back on after treatment for an injury.

Happened in our game twice yesterday, whilst some of our ignorant fans hurled abuse at the referee for correctly following the guidelines.

As said above a 3 min concussion protocol solves the issue… the player doesn’t get a choice in the matter … the ref just sends them to the sidelines… then you solve the issue of playing an injury down to stay on.

Keepers would be different… keep it the same protocol but you can have a ‘concussion sub’ if the manager wants to change them back then ok.

Thats true and when the ref today asked Zaniolo to wait on the sideline before returning the crowd booed this. Clearly the fans need to educated on this protocol change.
