Car Insurance - moan #376

MSE has some interesting insights - apparently naming a 2nd driver on a policy can lower it, who knew? may be worth a go.

I just used MSE to get a quote for a car i'm hoping to get & was quoted £460 - I'm already with the company that has that quote, so went direct to them & asked how much £579 & couldn't get a straight answer as to can I stop one & start the other & pay the difference ( if there is a difference at all, hmm I need to confirm that ) - they couldn't tell me in 90 mins of hanging on the chat bot...

I always name my mam on my policy as well as my wife. Lowers my premium at least 150 quid usually.
I'm not the most insurable driver either 😬.

Used to work in General Insurance, until I got fed up with the scams they used to rip off policyholders. Didnt work in car insurance though, but I imagine that the principles are similar.

Second driver - shows that you normally are from a household and they are more stable ie lower risk that a single person household.
Websites, if you are searching multiple sites for quotes and also getting requotes. The sites count the number of quotes they provide you and will prgressively get more expensive. This is mostly due to the comparison site, they get a commission based upon the policy and are often a law to themselves.

Not all quotes are equal, Very often there will be subtle differences in the small print. This make affect you if you have to claim. The headlines may look the same, but they can alter things such as length of time you can have a hire car. What constitutes a claim, in house hold insurance it was one claim per item and the excess is applied to each claim. etc

Insurance needs to be more highly regulated than it currently is. Equally customers need to be more savvy when shopping around, this doesnt mean searching too many times.

Lots of reasons given by the industry for a significant increase in premiums this year

1.Lots more drivers on the road after COVID meaning more accidents
2. Costs ( car parts and repairs) have shot up
3. Car thefts have sky rocketed ( especially keyless entry cars)
Actual costs of cars have gone up too.

In Oz your Car Registration (Rego) covers your tax, MOT and compulsory insurance. Basically 3rd party only. It is the vehicle that is insured, not the driver. So anyone with permission and a valid license can drive it.
It's a standard price for this based on vehicle NOT person.

Once car gets to a certain age, it varies state to state, you need a certificate of inspection to renew which is basically your MOT.

If you want fully comp insurance including fire and theft then you shop about and purchase seperately but at least everyone can get basic insurance at a reasonable cost.
This is a great policy 👏
