Car Insurance - moan #376

Seriously, they are making things up as they go along aren't they? Absolutely no logic to how the industry works.

Daughter realised this morning that she hasn't been insured for the last month. Apparently with Tesco there is a little "Auto Renewal" tickbox online which was accidentally unticked......but she was oblivious until she checked her insurance this morning........anyhow, learn by your mistakes won't happen again. I've never seen this, something to keep an eye on.

Renewals.......Tesco charged £900 last year. Went up to £1400. Wanted to charge £2400 as she is now "a new customer". WTF?? You get spanked for staying with your insurance company, so better to shop around.......but for them to hike the price £1000 in 4 weeks.... Wow.

Next moan - price comparison sites. Tesco were £2400, £2100 and £1800 on 3 different sites for the exact policy. Errr, no. The one she's gone for was £1400. Except when I looked it was £1600. Or £1800. Cheapest was £1300 when I looked.....but £1800 when my daughter looked.🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

The insurance industry really does what they want don't they - no real repercussions. What an industry......and as the old saying goes, at least d*ck Turpin wore a mask.

Is it the same in other countries? Or is it just the UK? Mental.

Almost the same situation with my wife. And money is just 'numbers' to her, she basically leaves me to worry whether we actually have any of it.

It was £700 last year, then it had gone up to £900+ (I thought it was a rip off but accepted everyone else's seemed to be going up so didn't question it). Then it was £1300, then £1400, then £1800! Eventually we paid £1000, seemed like that was just the number that came out of the hat that particular hour of that particular day. Seems absurdly expensive but I did some comparisons and it was the best we could get and only slightly above the £900 and something.

I wonder if our particular suburb is somehow prone to this kind of thing!

In Oz your Car Registration (Rego) covers your tax, MOT and compulsory insurance. Basically 3rd party only. It is the vehicle that is insured, not the driver. So anyone with permission and a valid license can drive it.
It's a standard price for this based on vehicle NOT person.

Once car gets to a certain age, it varies state to state, you need a certificate of inspection to renew which is basically your MOT.

If you want fully comp insurance including fire and theft then you shop about and purchase seperately but at least everyone can get basic insurance at a reasonable cost.

It's a bad area by all accounts - lot of cars get nicked, robbed etc.

As correctly pointed out, postcode lottery.

But even 3-4 years ago when the Heatons was like the wild west after it got dark..... insurance didn't go up like this. Crazy.

And the discrepancies with the insurers direct, and different price comparison sites 🤯🤯.

In Cyprus it's the car that's insured not you, obviously you either have to own the vehicle or have permission to drive it, sounds like a decent idea. Saves me a fortune visiting the kids.

I don't get these prices at all. Do people search all the comparison sites?. The most I or my wife have ever paid for a year's insurance in the last 40 yrs is £220 and that was 2 yrs ago.
This year we paid £210 and £190 both through compare the market and we both got 12 x £7 free car wash vouchers for the car wash at the Parkway centre.
I know age and area you live in make a difference but these are over a grand more .

Age seems to be a huge factor, do you both also have multiple years of no claims?

A younger person with a short no claims history is deemed a bigger risk.

I've never understood how you get it so cheap! But obviously area, age, value of car etc plays a part. We don't have a flash car but it is fairly new/big and is a hybrid. Wife had a few minor scrapes but not for a good while.

They say gender doesn't get taken into consideration anymore but I think it does. I don't drive myself, I walk and cycle everywhere (or train), and that seems to cost us money in insurance!

Ha when was the Heatons like that?
Be about 4? years ago - probably pre covid? We knew a lot of people who had cars nicked, broken into; houses broken into (car keys nicked). Break ins foiled. Muggings, robberies........

It's a desirable place to live apparently........😂😂

To my knowledge there have always been a fair amount of 'nice cars' being stolen (the burglars are usually just looking for car keys) but I was only going off what was written on the infamous local Facebook group that I haven't used since before covid. Always assumed they were part of a very professional car theft network as they never touched ours as it isn't flash enough (nor would I want it to be if I was just gonna be worried about it being nicked every night).

Saying that, about 4-5 years ago someone broke into our shed to discover there was literally nothing remotely interesting in it. So you might be right.

Yeah, bit of both. A few Mercs/Audi's/BMWs were nicked from our estate/local area.....couple of my wife's mates had their houses broken into and 2-3 cars nicked. Including normal Fiestas and Corsas 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️.

Lot of people had their doors / cars tried early hours by balaclava wearing scrotes.

Couple of sheds on our estate were done last weekend funny enough, crack team of thieving horticulturists possibly?

I like that idea.

I know a few had their tyres let down by eco-warriors recently. Someone left a 75% eaten cold doner kebab in a polysterene container on our car wheel a few weeks back. What a selfish tvvat! Could have at least gone 50/50 with me.

Lots of reasons given by the industry for a significant increase in premiums this year

1.Lots more drivers on the road after COVID meaning more accidents
2. Costs ( car parts and repairs) have shot up
3. Car thefts have sky rocketed ( especially keyless entry cars)

and you forgot

4. they were all robbing b***ds to begin with!

Crazy car prices including the second hand market going bonkers hasn't helped.

For example looking at small cars; a few years back a new Toyota Aygo would cost about 7 grand. You're talking north of 14k now.

Fortunately in our household neither me or the Mrs are that bothered by cars as long as they get us from A-Z so generally just focus on reliability and keep our cars (currently 10 year old focus and an older model Aygo) and run them into the ground. Not judging people who want a nicer motor though, it's just not something i'm bothered about.
