Car Camping

Anyone done it/do it?

Wondering if people know of any good spots in and around the Lakes? A lot of campsites don't allow you to 'sleep' in a car even though its kitted out like a small camper.

Missus is a little sceptical - too many horror movies. So would prefer a site ideally

Here you go mate.

Brilliant, i think been around other people would make her feel safer anyway!!

Somewhere like Side Farm or Gillside in Ullswater would probs be a good bet

Ullswater Holiday Park I can thoroughly recommend. Great facilities for all types of campers with a chippy and pub on site. Down on the lake edge about dusk you get the open water swimmers pulling up in the lay-byes. At least that’s what I thought they were doing.

Skye Farm Campsite. 5 mins walk to Buttermere and Crummock water.
Think they make campervans park up at the end of the car park (grass, not concrete), so not as aesthetically pleasing as the main camping area, but it's a perfect location still. 2 pubs and cafe right next door.

What happens if you have a drink before you go to sleep? Could you be breathalysed and nicked?

The offence is being in charge of the vehicle, so in theory. But police need a reason to breathalyse eg member of public reported you drinking or involved in a RTA, and even then if you can demonstrate you had no intent to drive you'd probably be ok, but a hassle.

Think its simpler than that. UK drink driving only applies to road network or public places. Campsites are private property . Not saying they cant breathalyse but they cant take it to evidence test at a police station unless they have reasonal suspicion or proof that you were on public roads before they caught up with you on private property

So is this a thing? And if so, why?
Certainly seems to be popular. Ideal for just rocking up and parking your car somewhere, back seats down and a mattress (designed for cars) fits perfectly, we then have an awning/gazebo designed for the car giving us an extension to the car. Its basically camping with out the tent to sleep in, quicker, warmer and more comfort.

Get yourself a drive away awning attached to the side of the car by a rail. And make it a blow up one, easy and less arguments. Sat in our T5 near Dundee at the moment. At least if the weather is crap, like here, we can detach and drive out for the day.

it's generally done in larger SUVs where you can fold rear seats down rather than sleeping in the back of a fiesta.

There are also tents you can get that go on top of cars
I just googled these car tents; never knew there was such a wide range! Didn’t even know they were a thing.

Yep, happened to my mate (not at a campsite but on the road).

Apparently the trick is to put the keys in the boot or on the car tyre (although I'm not sure whether the police are roaming campsites looking for this )
