Thank you to all that signed the petition and all those that came forward offering their services to volunteer. The show of strength was massive.
Now, should this be rubber stamped by the council exec in March, we have several months to pull together a long term plan for the museum, to raise it from a perceived poor relation to a jewel in the crown in the region's cultural and heritage attractions.
But thanks for all your efforts we have been given some real breathing space. We have demonstrated just how important this museum is to everyone.

Whilst I appreciate the efforts of all the people involved, and the fact that we need more cultural and tourist attractions ... the museum is terrible.

Would be a much better fit being located as a subsection of MIMA, and it's current venue being repurposed to something more befitting and appropriate for a park.

A lot of places have turned these sort of venues into nature centres, where people can go and handle, and learn about, wildlife etc. I'm sure there'd be many more better suggestions.

A subsection of MIMA - I don't get that point at all.
As for conversion to a nature venue - how would that be financed?

We have things like this in the area already. Butterfly World at Preston Park and the Owl sanctuary Kirkleatham. I'm not sure changing it to something similar would be benefical

MBBoro - I feel you’ve written something here and haven’t really thought about it.

Rob - That is great news, you must be really chuffed, well done to all those that worked hard to keep it open.

I dunno like, it does seem to make sense to have the Captain Cook Bithplace Museum at the site where he was born?

A genuine question, when was the last time any of you visited this place? I haven't in a long time I do go to the café there a bit as its dog friendly and its reasonably priced. The museum needs an overhaul I believe to start to get the customers back in as it always looks empty to me?

I think the last time I went in tge actual museum may have been primary school, so 25 years used the cafe a bit. Going to make an effort to take my little boy

We shouldn't get too excited, we need to see a way forward that doesn't drain our already depleted funds. This is a life line and we should all welcome it, but we need to continue looking for a permanent way forward for the museum that puts it on a healthy long term footing.

It definitely does that. There is massive potential for the museum but it needs everyone pulling in the same direction now.

You seemed to have made the inference that it needs to be a 'birthplace museum', not me.

The point remains that it would be much better suited to have a captain cook museum in a central location, and the park located building used for something more suitable.

Given no one on this thread seems to have accessed it since Bernie had his boots on, I'm not sure it's as 'worth fighting for' as some suggest. I went in a couple years ago for the first time since school days, and, to put it politely, it's poor.

Depends what you define as beneficial. Butterfly world and the owl sanctuary have genuine interest, and if you go in either on a decent day they'll be busy. Preston park have continually developed their museum also, making it more interactive and the interactive street is constantly being added to.

Captain Cook museum is desolate and a money pit, people walk past the entrance and up the stairs to the cafe. It is propped up by bored school children on trips.

I think for most locals, you probably go once as a kid and then again when you take your own kids / grandkids.

It needs to be revamped / marketed so it attracts more people from out of the area.
