Canada by train

The Inter-rail thread reminded me to ask about this. Anyone got any experience?

Anyone used them? Are they big/spacious/busy/quiet? Will be there in April travelling between the major cities of Ontario/Quebec.

We did a return trip from Ottawa to Niagra Falls one weekend whilst we were staying in the Capital. The trains were amazing, each carriage having its own steward and buffet facilities. Very enjoyable.

That's music to my ears. We are taking 3 or 4 lengthy journeys (with 2 very lively, young, unruly and occasionally violent bairns🤣).

Was that just standard class?

Daughter and SIL are going to Alberta on the 3 year visa.
Really looking forward to going out to see them. We've always wanted to do the Rockies train journey
Alberta, both winter and summer a gorgeous part of the world. You’ll love it Lemmy!
Just firmed up yesterday our upcoming trip for July…
Fly Toronto Calgary. Pick up rental car for 4 day stay in Canmore (Banff and Lake Louise etc), followed by 2 days in Jasper and return to Calgary for 4 days at the Stampede.
Back in the day, travelled there regularly for ski holidays but too old for that now.

I did a (rather too long) blog on our trip to Canada - including our train journeys when I first started up my travel business:

The short version is that the business class, which cost either £60/80 a ticket bought in advance, is better than most airline business class and more reminiscent of old 'first class' on BR/GNER. Complete bargain.

We’ve used the express (4hr) Via Rail between Toronto and Montreal several times. Very nice👍

But don’t ever use the overnight milk run between same. It’s cold, uncomfortable and at 8 or 9 hours way too long a journey👎

Thanks. But already got it booked for daytime. Don’t fancy the above with the younguns!

Been the other side Calgary to Vancouver through the Rockies on the train simply stunning. Great country also Toronto is fantastic.
Nice to hear that about Toronto. Plenty of people say there’s not much there, get out etc, but I don’t fully believe them. City that size will always have stuff worth seeing imho.

The Stampede is definitely on the agenda!

Sports, music, theatre, restaurants, museum, zoos etc there’s tons to do in TO. Mind you while we don’t get much snow anymore (much less than New York, Boston and far less than Buffalo) it’s probably best to visit in the warmer months.

Yeah, well it’ll be April.
