There was an article about this type of phenom either in The Times or on the beeb yesterday.
From my rudimentary meteorological knowledge it’s a sign of a front coming through (bit like red sky in the morning) and if you look here from 0000UTC to 1200 UTC a cold front passes down the country, hence the winds.
