Cambridge!

From an article

He would also play mind games with the opposition, in the summer, the thermostat would be turned all the way up in the away dressing room and turned off in the winter. He would take a full Under-18 squad to each away game so that they could cut up the grass of any ball-playing side’s pitch and disrupt their game.

He instructed the away dugout to be moved further down the pitch so that the opposition manager couldn’t see the far end of the pitch from his seat and put extra sugar in the away team’s vat of tea. When Beck’s team faced Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup in 1991, the pitch closer resembled Crosby beach due to the amount of sand that had been spread on the grass.

I have seen us fail at the Abbey Stadium several times, including the recent defeat in the Checkatrade Cup, when our u23s lost to a Cambridge side that included Uche Ikpeazu.
I went to that FA Cup tie in ‘91 fully expecting us to lose.
As a local lad, with mates supporting Cambridge, I’d been to see them play a few times under John Beck; and a lad who I used to kick about with called Lee Philpott played for them at the time.
They were very effective and, rather than just playing Wimbledon hoofball, played to a very clear, regimented pattern that brooked no individuality. Steve Claridge was often a victim of this, and another player called Chris Leadbitter (who I think was from Teesside) was once substituted half way through the first half for running with the ball through the midfield rather than playing the ball towards the corner flag.
We were never in with a shout that day, former Norwich and Ipswich players Trevor Putney and John Wark got nothing at all out of the game but dog’s abuse from the crowd.
But we did better than Sheffield Wednesday who were near the top of the league at the time and were absolutely thrashed in the next round.
Arsenal beat them in the Quarter Final, and John Beck’s vice-like reign fell apart the following season, when the players rebelled in the play-offs to join the first Premier League. When Histon beat Leeds in the FA Cup ten years ago or so, John Beck was their coach.

It’s taken 30 years for Cambridge to get back to anywhere near those heady days; but the current manager is a totally decent guy and the set up at the club now is one that deserves their moment of glory!
But, I want us to play them in Round 5 and finally beat them!!

Yes - as I said a beach of a pitch
There were also huge banners in each corner of the ground that said “Quality”. A reminder to their players that they should always hit the ball into the corners, so my neighbour and their other winger could ping the ball across goal for Dublin and Taylor to head home.
