Calvert Lewin red card

I was a bit puzzle with it, even on the replay I couldn’t really see why it would be a straight red card.
I guess any tackle with studs showing is a red now.

I’m not even sure what the exact laws are around dangerous / reckless etc.

But I’d imagine they are being interpreted too literally.

Whereas it needs a more common sensed approach. Use some more ‘personal judgement’ on a ‘tackle by tackle’ basis.

Looking at it you’d say no but it’s what’s in the rules and that’s what referees apply.
I’m no expert but I believe these are the rules “copied and pasted from a good search”.

“SERIOUS FOUL PLAY

A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play.

Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play”.

I don’t believe he used excessive force or brutality at all. And I don’t believe he endangered the safety of his opponent. His opponent (Clyne) was in danger of getting a little knock on the leg, something that might cause a bruise. His “safety” was never in danger, no chance of breaking his leg or whatever.

It’s a contact sport after all, by playing you are consenting to the fact that you might get slightly hurt as part of the game.

Clynes reaction didn’t help. Amazing how they get up 2 minutes afterwards and can sprint up and down after feigning how bad it was.
This week has seen the bad side of VAR. red card tonight and probably the 2 softest penalties for Liverpool.
It’s a contact sport ffs

'Dangerous' 'reckless' 'excessive force' etc and all the other red card buzz words are being interpreted as any type of contact.

Its a minor glancing blow with studs up. The rules are nonesense with the people applying them clueless

The level of contact is irrelevant.

If someone threw a punch and missed they’d still be off, they couldn’t argue that they hadn’t actually made contact.
