C19 Getting Worse in The States - Record Numbers

It doesn't look like they're getting hold of things in the same way that we seem to be starting to see light at end of the, albeit long, tunnel here. I know we're nowhere near out of the woods yet, but at least we seem to be seeing some improvements, certainly with the good news on vaccines

Worrisome as we have so many friends and family over there, although thankfully all have remained safe and well to date, with one exception of a guy we knew reasonably well who passed away with Covid back in the first wave

I was just about to start a thread titled "US burns while Trump fiddles". Boris might be an idiot but right or wrong at least he is active with regard to the virus. Trump has gone completely missing in action, sulking about the election.

Even New York, that seemed to be avoiding a second surge, has now experienced a major upsurge in cases.
That's the most concerning element for me as most of our friends are in Manhattan/Brooklyn. Obviously that's a somewhat selfish view as it's not just about individuals I happen to know, but nonetheless, I worry that any loved one may get infected. All I think are working from home though and are, (usually) a sensible bunch so wont be exposing themselves to any unnecessary risks

Thing is, why would NY avoid a second surge though? Literally everywhere else appears to have had one except the far eastern nations who inexplicably have come out of this with barely any damage.

You would have to expect one of the most densely populated areas on earth would be the most susceptible to a second wave wouldn't you, so I agree, NY was always in the running. Some of the figures from the FE do seem dubious

They are unbelievable, in the most literal sense of the word.

It’s actually getting really scary in the states now.
I heard about one study that estimated that 105 million have already had it over there.
Although on the face of it that’s fairly positive as more would have had it, and survived, than previously thought, so the IFR is probably lower than thought, it still means approx 220 million are yet to be exposed. With winter here now and so much political nonsense around masks, opening up etc, it’s extremely worrying.

I have a Skype call on Saturday with some of our friends over there, based in NY and NJ so will be interesting to get their views on how things are panning out

A CDC study no less. 👀

Has the potential to alter IFR rates around the world.

It’s working that the most free thinking country in the world can’t understand basic transmission science.

when you look at the global response there can’t be many countries that have done less than the US

Agreed, but for a good while they seemed to bucking the trend and keeping cases at a stable level.

Love the States and there’s some genuinely nice and intelligent people there but there’s also a lot of very stubborn, very arrogant and very paranoid people there. Thanksgiving will be driving the new infections.

Australia and New Zealand also have what some might call 'incredibly low' rates of CoVid-19 - are their figures equally questionable? And if not, why not?
Hmm. Yes they are probably questionable but it doesn’t feel quite as strange with very sparsely populated island states who we know locked down very early. I don’t think I could apply the same logic towards Japan.

While some Countries are trying to stem the pandemic other Countries are failing and letting their people fly out to reignite it.

Our niece, her (Australian) partner and young daughter went back to Australia last Sunday, they're going to Brisbane. All 3 have to spend 2 weeks in isolation at a camp near Darwin before they're allowed out.
