Burnley 0-5, Sheff U 0-5

Burnley were decent last season but the other 2 were nothing special and none of them really invested
I guess it depends on what you mean by really invested as according to transfermarket Burnley spent a lot of money.

Burnley spent 110 million
Luton spent 25 million
Sheffield United spent 67 million

Not sure how reliable this site is but I was surprised that Burnley spent as much as they have.

Yes Burnley spent loads on players in the Summer

James Trafford £15m
Sande Berge £13m
Amdouni £19m
Ramsey £16m
Jordan Beyer £15m
Wilson Odobert £12m
Dara Oshea £8m
Obafemi, Delcroix and Kileosho £10m combined.

I stand corrected on Burnley, although those figures are in Euros and gross. SU in about £30m net which is not much in the prem.

I do wonder how much risk Kompany is under. They very clearly expected to stay up but they're dead and buried now. Even if Everton get deducted more points and Forest a likely 6 they're still marooned.
If they get relegated PSR is going to hammer them for the next 4 years and this summer will be a fire sale. They look to have overpaid for some very average players.

They really have. Looking at some of those fees they paid you'd be very upset if you were a Burnley fan. But thats the issue - you have to consider spending big on average players if you haven't got Europe as an attraction. I would be upset as a Boro fan if we paid £16m for Ramsey for example. Decent but IMO isn't worth that amount. And the same for a keeper who was on loan at Bolton the previous season.

Pretty close to net - their income was less than £5m over last summer for departures. Although they made a lot the previous season.

I've been really impressed with Luton this season. They are incredibly competitive (in a good way), play good football & are brilliantly organised. Fair play to those involved in making that happen, they seem to be exceeding expectations so far.

Yes they are certainly making a better fist of survival than Burnley and Sheff U - and it may be enough especially if Forest get points deducted. But they leak goals and at the moment their scoring is decent.

it wasn't too long ago that being promoted was a really exciting thought, now it seems one huge struggle just to survive against the odds. Even if you get 100+ points and you still can't get out of the bottom 3 all season then what chance is there?? Without huge investment there really is no chance.

All 3 teams that were newly promoted last season stayed up, and they're going to stay up comfortably this time too.

It's just 3 stinking teams this time around.

Even then, Luton are only 4 points off safety with a game in hand, and they've got a bargain basement squad.

Exactly. I think it's a bit of a myth the idea there's a widening gap between the Premier League and the championship, more promoted teams have stayed up in the last ten years than did in the 1990s. 97/98 was the last time all 3 promoted teams were relegated.

Yes how I yearn for the distant days of 2022/2023 when it was still possible for promoted sides to have a chance. Will we ever see their like again? We can but dream.
