Bulldozing Stockton High Street

It doesn’t look bold enough, looking at that picture they could do with pedestrianising at least that section of the high street so that it all flows down to the river. A project like that also cries out for joined up thinking and maybe a Greater Teesside Authority as it would be a shame to have all that money and effort spoilt by whatever cr@p ( see the building there now) they build on the opposite bank.
The opposite bank is the same local authority and am surprised you are having a go at the office blocks that line the southern bank opposite the new park. Is that what you mean?

I can definitely very behind that, but as you say way too long term a solution. Need to stop concentrating these people together but then people in nice areas don’t want prolific thieves and drug users in their back yard so a bit of a catch 22
I agree with this, the only solution I can think of is drastic but it works. They should follow the port Clarence example, it’s a little village out of the way of anywhere and full of bag heads etc. They get left to get on with it and that’s how they like it, for the more established bag heads I think this is the only way. There is only so much help these people can receive/be offered before it becomes down to them to help themselves, if they aren’t willing to do it then what more can be done?

We are in an area surrounded by halfway houses and it’s awful you can stand there for 15 minutes and the only people you see are smack heads and prossies. No area will ever progress to a meaningful level if there is a ghetto of drug users taking over the place.

I quite like it.

It seems realistic and achievable for Stockton Council to deliver, not like the other hair brained schemes.

It might also link into increased occupancy of the new council sponsored Hotel which is situated at the bottom of the development.

This looks great, would be good if they could get some small bars down there, near the riverside, with outside seating for summer and all-glass fronts or divides for winter.

Before Covid struck the Hotel was doing well. Making a profit & ooccupancy rates ~75%

What such Schemes like this depend on is private sector money . It’s like Middlehaven where council did the civil engineering and infrastructure but you NEED private money to thrive and grow . It seems it’s a great idea but at the worst time insofar as private companies licking their wounds for some time especially with the Covid factor here for years

My thoughts from a few weeks I've had down the river, there's next to nothing down there where you can have a beer, coffee or bite to eat. So long as they're built and owned by the council and leased the outlay will be recouped and updates/repairs affordable.

There is a bar down there, where the old Joe rigs used to be, I’d assume this would bring those buildings into the forefront of use (unless they’re getting demolished!)

It’s always struggled because of footfall those units, although vadah does well on word of mouth. Having them be at the riverside with all this could be great for that area

Wouldn’t surpris me if those buildings aren’t listed . I remember going in a cafe there for a coffee mid 80s facing the steel works over the river . They appear to be old warehouses and I used to shop at the windsurf shop on ground floor But that’s likely gone ( much like my ability to windsurf )

Looking at the renders the old Joe rig buildings are still there, the 3 white square things look like they could be kiosks / cafe / bars

Funny as reading the comments in any article like this in the gazette. There are so many people on there that are either clearly paid shills or activists like smoggyrainbow was that will just lay into the council no matter what, as if they just should cut all a service and spend no money on anything at all to keep council tax rises down.

Teesside Park was the death of stockton high street

Would have happened anyway - this argument is way too simplistic

Internet shopping, business rates, Covid, parking availability / costs, brands on the high street, public transport etc all have a part to play. Plenty of towns without a teesside park will be going through the same pattern of change

more recently, if a Tesco, asda, had bought ’ the mall, post office ‘ plot, many more people would of came into the high street , and perhaps that would of been a start of new businesses springing up around it . A mans shop like curry’s, a toy shop for kids Etc....
