Bryan Robson: Middlesbrough relegation cost me chance of Manchester United job

Is he for real? ... he left Boro in 2001 and SAF didn't retire until 2013

Ferguson made noises about retiring for many years before he finally did, so I suppose if you're being generous then you can see where he's coming from.

But his relegation with Middlesbrough was in 1997, nowhere near the point that Ferguson was retiring.

It was also right near the start of Robson's managerial career.

To be fair, he’s not saying it cost him the job or in what timeframe, just that whatever chance he had of getting it eventually was gone.

If we had stayed up, anything was possible. We’ve all heard the rumours about who we were due to sign that summer. Juninho would have stayed too and we would undoubtedly have stepped up a level or two the next season.

He's surely got to look inwards with that then.

We were one of the best backed clubs in England financially, it wasn't a huge task just to keep us up.

IIRC Roberto Carlos and Gabriel Batistuta were the two massive names that were pretty much signed, sealed and delivered had we stayed up that season.

Its his own fault. Should have played the kids at Blackburn.

It was Roberto Carlos and Paul Ince. Carlos wasn't agreed but an approach had been made.

I see it like this too, I think Robson - and Boro - would have gone from strength to strength had we stayed up and given his legacy at Man Utd he must have been under consideration as Ferguson's replacement.

Roberto Carlos wasn’t a done deal, Bryan Robson and Keith Lamb went to Brazil to speak to Juninho and his advisors, and watched a game that Roberto Carlos was playing in, liked what they saw, expressed an interest, but were told your a week to late, a deal has been done with Inter Milan.
