My god what an absolute shītshow. Its a very depressing watch on how government incompetence, coupled with blatant and underhand profiteering by building companies has led to what we have today.
Absolutely shocking.

It's called capitalism. Housing as a commodity for profit and investment rather than to meet a basic human need. So we have the haves and the have nots, those who want the value of their bricks and mortar to keep rising due to shortage (unearned profit), and those who have no hope of buying anything, who rely on social housing that no longer exists. It's really quite simple to work out why it is as it is.

Having a decent home is a basic human right and shouldnt depend on how much money you have in your wallet.

I remember when I first stood for council in 2015, all the big well known landlords had vote "independent" posters in their tenanted houses- such was my public support for a town wide landlord registration scheme, with a "fit for human habitation" clause in the agreement.

I lost by 29 votes.

Margaret Thatcher being PM is the actual answer
It really is the actual answer. A strong Labour Govt not over turning it when they had the money and opportunity is also a disappointing reason we still are where we are
Those of us that aren't middle class see the horror of these mistakes for our kids

This programme is making me incredibly angry. Every single facet of this is infuriating, planning system, financing, politicians, NIMBY pressure groups. Total disaster.

Agreed new labour was never going to stop right to buy, however they did the square root of fůck all in terms addressing the declind in social housing stock. Both parties viewed the rise of private landlords and boom in house prices as evidence of a successful economy when its patently obvious its been a disaster for millions of families.
Limited state intervention on the free market bus was the neoliberal mantra of blairs new labour, when greater investment and radical thinking was needed in regard to housing. We know the Conservatives end game is always to make the minority richer but labour were sleeping at the wheel in terms of diminishing social housing stock and stopping the private landlord takeover of social housing.
