Brit Awards scraps male and female categories and goes gender-neutral

I mean... why. Are people really crying out for this, who is being harmed or excluded by the current categories?

An example of where hyper-sensitivity to identity and representation actually has diminishing returns and leads to less opportunities and exposure for everyone.

For example: if you have six nominees for the gender-neutral, colour and sexuality-blind Best Artist category, you can bet your ass it'll kick off if it doesn't include two men, two women, one gender-neutral, some artists from LGB+ communities and there's no way you'd ever have a shortlist with only white artists. These are all good things in isolation. But, rather than being truly un-discriminatory, your judging panel will then be hyper focused on putting together a list where no group is excluded, rather than the true "best artists".

Doesn't that mean less exposure for three female artists and three male artists who would have made the list last year?

Isn't it a bit embarrassing just giving participation awards because you're worried about perceived offence?

Shouldn't you just be judging the music?

You're still discriminating and putting people into categories, you're just pretending you're not.

I'm happy to be persuaded I'm wrong about this.
 
Brits, Grammys, etc are all Marketing polys anyway

How many times have you seen "Winner of 2 Brit awards" - and then people go... "Oh well, they must be good then!"

Same as Movie awards - paid for by the industry to sell the product

I agree, Miss World in 2021 would probably be won by a woman formally known as Dave who used to be 17 stone, drink John Smiths and drive lorry’s for a living.
 
As has been said who cares about the gender of the musician. Although after three years of the same black lesbian (or substitute your favourite gender/race etc) winning awards the entire show will descend into a maelstrom of competing victimhoods.

That's the thing about identity politics. It's consumes itself. First it's feminists complaining about not having equal opportunity; then it's trans women cancelling feminist lesbians. I feel for them all but it's bloody funny to watch the challenges of intersectionality. Post-Modernism is a wonderful thing - pity it's so destructive.

Is it really that terrible just having to accept a change in the wording of an announcement on the underground? Seems a strange thing for you to be annoyed with

It is just recognition that anyone can make good music and you don’t have to artificially create categories because of sex.

Identity politics? What’s the point Of saying stuff like that then going on to hypothesise an extreme.

They will judge the music and people will win and there will be arguments about did they deserve it.
Much like now.

What could be better is the ‘best’ is judged on music alone.

People that get annoyed by this kind of thing come across as feeble minded reactionary idiots so probably best not to throw your hat into that ring.
 
Not bothered what the lovvies do at their self-congratulatory lavish and expensive award ceremonies. Most other professions don't have such a ridiculous thing.

And the winner of the best left handed albino supporting bricklayer of the year is......
 
Haven't got a problem with having best artist instead of male/female.

I do have a problem when awards are handed out to even up the different genders/identities/colour.

The awards should be on merit, not because not enough women or gay men have won. It completely devalues the award.

Art and literary awards don't need gender categories, just what is judged to be the best work in the genre.
