Brief Encounter on BBC2 now

One of the greatest British films ever made.
As old as I am now, the end still gets me... massively 😭
A wonderful film, so nostalgic. I love those old black and white films. The architecture of the buildings, the clothing, the sense of innocence, the respect people showed to each other, respect for authority and men not swearing in front of women.

Yeah, I am old fashioned but give me those days again now. Not the feral youths we have riding on motorbikes with faces covered by scarfs. Or no respect for authority. Beautiful wooden seating replaced by concrete slabs - See Mbro centre for an example. Aesthetic buildings rather than skyscrapers with not a jot of character or beauty to the eye.

As a child of the 60s I fondly recall one night in Mbro centre, near the town hall, looking up at all the buildings. The rain was coming down and they looked majestic. Nowadays a child would be discouraged from walking in the town centre at night. That innocence has gone too.

As Philip Larkin once said in his poem Going Going

'And that will be England gone, the shadows, the meadows, the lanes, the guildhalls, the carved choirs. There will be books, it will linger on in galleries, but all that remains for us will be concrete and tyres.'

How right he was.

Quality film, not watched it for a while but still have it on DVD (need to really get rid of the collection of DVDs on this day and age 🤣).

I read someone write about it once who commented that they aren't the best looking couple in the world and are actually both quite ordinary by film star standards. This makes it more believable as it just seems to be a tale about ordinary folk in a dilemma. Totally agree with that assessment.

I was tempted to go to the station it was filmed at a few years ago when over that way, they have it playing in the waiting room on a loop and there's other memorabilia from the film there too.

Celia Johnson was absolutely gorgeous, especially in Brief Encounter. Trevor Howard - maybe.

Celia Johnson was a fantastic actress. She should have been given an Oscar for the Prime of Miss Jean Brodie - how was it ever given to Maggie Smith?

Be careful of what you think you remember. We all recall our childhood through our child memories, adults at the time would more likely remember a less innocent scene.
