BREXIT Come Early! Freight and passengers banned from France!

So we are severed from Europe due to the new strain of Covid. Boris doing a COBRA meeting in the morning. Tomorrow's news will show panic buying as they have stopped freight too.

If only Boris was trusted in the EU, or we had an amazing relationship with the EU, or hadn't spent the last month winding up Macron about fishing...

I wonder if Boris will remember to turn up for the meeting. He's skipped a few this year. He is starting to look more turkey like with every passing day.
Had he managed our border properly back in Feb then we could have avoided so much mayhem.
We should have used our island status to protect ourselves. Instead Boris has effectively transformed us into a leper colony by welcoming the infected with no controls. Sick man and now laughing stock of Europe, all thanks to that useless get and his 3 stooges.
Worst p.m. in living history.

Are you suggesting this new strain doesn't actually exist?
I'm sure it must exist.... but the 'thought' had crossed my mind that perhaps it didn't - or at least, not quite as reported. I've read a couple of articles suggesting that at this stage it's too early / difficult to accurately say whether the increased rate of infection is actually due to a mutation, or due to people's behaviour. (ie. London being in Tier 2). I imagine they'd talked about a more virulent strain of Covid to get more people to comply with Tier 4, and possibly didn't expect other countries to close their borders.

I posted this last night. Apparently infections in London due to the new mutation of the virus increased from 10 to 15% to 60% of all cases in a week. With cases also doubling in a week, 88 cases of the old strain led to 80 cases a week later; 12 cases of the new strain led to 120 cases a week later. That is a frightening increase.

Yes, I just read your other post. Alarming indeed. That said, according to the articles I read (one of which is on the BBC this morning) it was saying that it's still hard to prove that the increase in the new strain is due to increased virulence, rather than being in the right place at the right time ie. Tier2 London.

I have no strong view either way. Just discussing.

Someone on R4 this morning was saying it's easy to identify as one of the three PCR indicators doesn't show for the new strain.

Of course this is the problem now. Half of us never trusted Johnson and co. to begin with. Even some of the people who voted for him didn't but saw him as a means to an end.

Those who did somehow initially believe he was some sort of loveable honest rogue type figure have now also realised he's a serial liar who changes the narrative to suit himself.

Just when the country needs to have complete trust in the government it's probably at an all time low. And the government mostly have themselves to blame.

The next few months are going to be rough. Hopefully it's just the next few months (in terms of the virus, brexit is another matter altogether).

This is the nail on the head. If Boris told me the virus had gone I’d probably start wearing a hazmat. As things stand, he says there’s a new strain, so I just assume he’s heavily exaggerating things to spin the story as something less negative for himself.

Where I live when I speak to people the opinions don't reflect the loss of Trust at all.

The general tone is support for the government and the difficult unprecedented situation they are in. It surprised me just how much blind support there is in fact.

People very much just blame each other and do not question the decisions being made by the government. I often feel when I read on here, and my own opinions are a world away from the general population.

Depends where you live. In Cambs it’s no surprise. But then did you ask them what they thought when London was left in tier 2? Did they say that it was right to lock down almost the entire north because they were probably “behaving irresponsibly”? What do they say now?

Look at the comments from the Waverley councillor, about why Waverley has been left in T2 despite the rest of Surrey being T4. Apparently it’s a “reward” for their “good behaviour”. What patronising and non-sensical horse ****.

I don't disagree. I just find it interesting how different the views are to the ones I hold and are evidenced here.

I think it's fair that most people down here are oblivious to the North generally.

I’m sure. I work with a lot of southerners and I used to live down there. There is a significant cohort of southerners (definitely not all) who truly believe the entire urbanised north is a dump full of unruly types. It’s sad that they’re lacking any enlightenment on this, but in some ways you can’t blame them when you look at how the north is often framed to them.

It’s funny how eu nations are banning travel from the UK one by one and not the EU as a whole.
It’s almost as if nations from within the EU still have their own sovereignty to make such decisions.

perhaps the biggest Brexit lie of all is they didn’t

We’ve been sending them scientists, engineers, inventors, artists, actors, musicians and various other “Cultural Missionaries” going on forever, and they still haven’t got the message.
Oh, and our forefathers worked in grime that made some of them very rich.

Ref - cut off - as a country we have relied more & more on imports of everything OK some food stuffs we can't produce here because of our climate, but we import apples (we have an ideal climate for apples) and some apple crops go unpicked here its not judged to be worth the effort. We have productive fallow fields which farmers are paid for, but nothing to eat is grown in. The same with non food stuffs most imports could be made/produced here, but its judged too expensive or just not worth the effort. No one really bothers with green transport miles when they go shopping for new phone or jeans and even food with 90% of the population. However when transport is restricted people may notice a difference. My worry is one day the money will run out in this country and people may not accept our newly created (inflationary) pounds. Some how as a nation we have to be able to stand more on our own 2 feet.

Currently we seem to be known as Plague Island - like in 28 Days Later - it can change as a country we must be getting close to 20% who have had the virus in some form.
