Brexit Bonus - Driving in Spain

So according to the Government I don't need an International Driving Permit to drive in Spain for up to 60 days. Cool. But Brits who are hiring cars are being refused their vehicles or getting fines if they don't have one and there is nothing you can do about it according to the locals where I am staying. Fine. So I pop to the post Office and hand over £5.50 for the permit and £6.00 for Passport Photos for it.

The permit only lasts a year and dependant on when some ancient law was passed (1923, 1949 or 1969 I think) you need one of three different permits.

So I get my permit and it's like a little WW2 ration book. Taking Britain back to the 1940's eh? Well done Brexiteers 👏

Anyway - just a heads up to anyone hiring a car in the EU, might be better to be safer than sorry as there isn't much you can do when you get over there.

I was in Paris recently and went to rent a vehicle — asked for my passport so I gave my new Brit passport — they told me because of Brexit I need a IDL— so then I showed my California driving license— problem solved. Discrimination maybe?

You really mean....
"We haven't the foggiest what we negotiated so you had best figure it out yourself. Then let Frosty know because he's also still fkn clueless".
Never mind clueless. He was responsible for negotiating it and has no idea what he agreed to.

Much the same reason I'm hanging on to my NY driving licence.

I wish I'd stop starting these threads.

But it really is the gift that keeps on giving isn't if? Hard to think of an aspect of British life it hasn't made worse

I hired a car in fuerteventura last week and only showed my driving license …….
I gather it’s pot luck if you need an IDP or not so I thought it best not to risk it.

Wouldn’t it be nice though if we could get rid of red tape rather than Brexit causing mountains of it.

Is this stupid shoite reciprocal. I really don't think anyone knows. We went through to passport control at Larnaca, sign said Non EU but the border Force put us in an EU queue. It's like doing the Hockey Cockey.

Perhaps we should be honary EU members? Lol 😆
Perhaps one day we'll all be able to travel freely anywhere in Europe, get reciprocal health care, even work there without restriction. British goods might even be sold in Europe with a minimum of paperwork. Produce from the warmer countries would be imported by road to fill the shelves of our supermarkets. Just a dream, I know.

You’ll have to stop watching that Billy Liar movie — it’ll drive you insane.

Rules of origin grace period ends in 2 months. **** loads more red tape incoming 😮

No. They've a reciprocity agreement. French and US drivers can drive in each other's country for 1 year.
