Brentford have reached the Premier League after winning at Wembley - 10 years on from their defeat to Carlisle United at the national stadium.

The Bees saw off Swansea in today's Championship play-off final to reach the top flight.

It marks a remarkable rise for the London club, whose head of recruitment is the former Carlisle No2 Lee Dykes.

And it comes a decade after they came off second best to the Cumbrians at the stadium in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy final.

Goals from Ivan Toney (penalty) and Emiliano Marcondes inside the first 20 minutes proved enough for a 2-0 win this afternoon. Jay Fulton was later sent off for the Swans.

The Bees' progress since losing out to Peter Murphy's Carlisle volley in 2011 has been dramatic under the ownership of Matthew Benham.

They were, like Carlisle, a third-tier club 10 years ago - but while the Blues now sit in League Two, Thomas Frank's side can prepare for league games against Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool and co in 2021/22.

Dykes has been a key part of their set-up since joining them from Bury in 2019, following his earlier stint at Brunton Park under Keith Curle.

He is not the only ex-Blues man who will enjoy life in the Premier League with the Bees - as former Carlisle manager Steven Pressley is set to join the top-flight new boys.

Pressley will begin as head of individual devlopment with the club on July 1. The ex-Blues boss's son Aaron is also with the club and was recntly named Brentford B player of the year.

It feels,a little bittersweet as I’m chuffed to bits for Brentford and they deserve it but on the other hand gutted as they way they are run and the football they play they are moving forward and we at best seem to be stuck in the past if not slowly sliding backwards!

Another club that were historically miles behind us that are now a league above us. Another example of those at the top being out of touch with modern football.

Fair play to Brentford though, no club deserves it more than them. They will be a great addition to the premier league

Fully deserved👏. I guess I can now stop droning on about how good a recruitment model they have and how do the find so many decent forwards when we have a converbelt of dross costing far more.

I bet they wish the had a bigger ground. It maybe new and shiny but simply doesn't look big enough. I bet you'd have a right mare getting a ticket.

I remember when we played them in the League Cup, on route to winning it in Cardiff. Practically our reserves (N Whelan, Marinelli), beat them easily and Downing off the bench for a solo goal-scoring debut. Just how many like that would this lad score for us?

Brentford fans came round with a collection bucket. 'It's all right for you', one said. 'you've got a benefactor chairman' (as if that somehow meant we all had spare cash). How things have changed.
