Brendan Rodgers - Sack race

I presume they have seen things like Newcastle being taken over and realised that they will never be able to compete at the very top for the long term. It requires a lot of investment. They are probably better being a permanent, sustainable PL club than trying to slog it out at the top. There is always the danger that means relegation at some point instead because all it takes is a bad run or a bad manager appointment, a few bad purchases/sales etc then it's too difficult a job to stay up. Everton have been doing it for years. They have tried and failed to mix it at the top and are now stuck trying to stay in the league. The gap between the super clubs and the rest is getting bigger. You can't really outspend the bottom half of the PL anymore so it's firmly 2 different leagues of the top 6ish and everyone else. It's very competitive down the bottom end now. Even clubs like Forest can spend £100m+ so I'm not sure how sustainable the "just survive" model can be.

I'm not sure there can be sustainability in the PL. There's too much money at stake so as soon as it looks like a club might be falling out the bottom they will have to spend big. It will be hard to attract players if you outright admit you have no ambition of becoming a CL team though. You'll only get the ones interested in a payday.

I think Rodgers definitely wants to leave but he's waiting to be pushed to claim his payoff. He's not going to jump.
