Boro's 25 Man Squad

A current review of the players weve currently got at the club with the view to finalising a 25 man squad by the end of the transfer window.

Eight of the 25 must be home-grown, a player, regardless of nationality, that has been registered with any club associated with the English or Welsh FA for at least three years prior to turning 21.

Any player aged 21 or under doesn’t have to be included in the 25-man squad. However, any loan player – irrespective of age – must be included. A player is deemed to be an ‘Under-21’ if they are under the age of 21 as of January 1 of the year in which the season starts. For the 2024/25 campaign, this is someone born on or after January 1st, 2003.

BORO'S 25 MAN SQUAD AS OF 09/07/24

1. Seny Dieng
2. Tom Glover
3. Zach Hemming (Home Grown)
4. Sol Brynn (HG)
5. Tommy Smith (HG)
6. Luke Ayling (HG)
7. Matt Clarke (HG)
8. Dael Fry (HG)
9. Anfernee Dijksteel
10. Alex Bangura
11. Darragh Lenihan (HG)
12. Lukas Engel
13. Dan Barlaser (HG)
14. Hayden Hackney (HG)
15. Riley McGree
16. Isaiah Jones (HG)
17. Jonny Howson (HG)
18. Aidan Morris
19. Finn Azaz (HG)
20. Emmanuel Latte Lath
21. Matthew Hoppe
22. Alex Gilbert (HG)
23. Josh Coburn (HG)
24. Marcus Forss (HG)
25. Delano Burgzorg
26. Cain Sykes (DOB 14/8/2002) (HG)
27. Jack Hannah (DOB 25/12/2002) (HG)

In addition we have also got Rav Van Den Berg who wont count towards the figures as hes still classed as an U21 player and any other Academy player under the age of 21, like Law McCabe.

If likely Jamie Jones signs that takes us up to 28, so a bit of trimming still needed from the squad. You would think 2 keepers would go out whether permanently or on loan. Hoppe definitely. The two young lads Sykes and Hannah possible outgoing loan deals for their development too.

So excluding Sykes and Hannah it's one out, one in now - though we have to assume that we will lose 1 keeper (and one to be replaced by Jamie Jones) and Hoppe - meaning we have 2 potential slots.

Plus no chance Hoppe makes the final squad

So, realistically, at the minute it looks like this?

1. Seny Dieng
2. Tom Glover
3. Zach Hemming (Home Grown)
4. Sol Brynn (HG)
5. Tommy Smith (HG)
6. Luke Ayling (HG)

24. Marcus Forss (HG)
25. Delano Burgzorg

So its a 1 in, 1 out job.

Giles comes in and 1 of Bangura/Engel leave so we're back to a full 25
Then 2x GK will leave, giving us 2 empty spots for loanees?

Sykes, Hannah and Hoppe won't be in the official squad whether they leave or not.

Presumably letting one of Engel or Bangura go for Giles to come in, so no increase there.

Obviously 2 keepers will leave, and I think Dijksteel will leave if Smith gets fit.

So that's a 22 man squad list when you cut the chaff.

I think there's a reasonable chance a RB leaves as well. Smith, Ayling and Dijksteel all listed. Will Dijk move on this summer?

Only 1 keeper in effect though as J Jones will need to be added

Also question marks about Barlaser and you’d think if McGree doesn’t sign a new deal then he could well be off with just 12 months left on his deal

Yeah, that was with me going from a 28 person list including Jones.

Hoppe, Dijskteel, Hemming and Glover leaving.

Sykes and Hannah not being in the squad to begin with.

So 22 players left, with 3 spots left for any other over 21 or loan additions we make.

I'd remove Sykes, Hannah, Dijksteel and Hoppe from that list as I expect all four to be sold.

Jamie Jones is reportedly already in talks of a 1 year deal so you'd expect two of Glover/Brynn/Hemming to either be sold or loaned out.

.... which leaves 22 players, so room for 3 more.

IF one of those players is Giles, which I still don't think it will be - I don't think we'll keep 3 left backs, so one of Engel/Bangura goes too.

I think that leaves us with three options:
- I can't see us going into the new season with zero loan signings - I know we want to be less reliant on them - but 1 very strong loan signing would be a great addition.
- Would signing one or two U21 squad players be another thing we're looking at - We had three last season in RVDB, Hackney and Coburn.
- Does Law McCabe or another academy player (U21) become a permanent member of the squad (like Coburn was last season - i.e. not playing for the U21 team).

I think we usually start the season/finish the window with a spot or two spare too - maybe for an emergency loan? - I think Bilongo was put in that spot last season.

I’m not sure Tommy Smith will be in that 25, he’s apparently still weeks away from kicking a ball, don’t see him being back in first team action until back end of the year, they won’t include him if that is the case. I’d expect Djiksteel to be off if they can get a fee for him and then a RB coming in perhaps on loan as cover for Ayling

Tommy Smith was said to be ahead of Marcus Forss in terms of recovery - he's in Portugal doing light training.

Looking Like Giles could be closer to coming here according to the Gazette today ; but I really like Bangera and he looks like a better defender and excellent getting forward (in a different way to Giles) as well as Bangera has goals in him - Giles doesn't.

As long as that Academy player was born after Jan 1st 2003 he won’t count towards the 25 man squad, even though he can be in it like Rav.

Coburn and Hackney were classed as U21 players but not this coming season

Yeah I mean to just add to the squad - without adding to the number.

We usually have 2 or 3 who are under U21 - this season we only have Rav (unless McCabe is going to play a bigger part).

I have high hopes for Coburn this season....
