Boro v Chelsea in a House Divided

I thought it worth posting a link to this blog I wrote at the time of the FA cup game a couple of years ago. My son is still an unrepentant Chelsea supporter, deeply unsatisfied with with events post-Abramovic. His birthday is next week, so his present is a no-brainer. You guessed it - tickets for the second leg, in with the Boro. He's been given strict instructions to keep his mouth shut during the game. He has reluctantly agreed, strictly on the understanding that I will not keep on telling him about my narrow escape in The Battle of Stamford Bridge. Kids, eh?

I do wonder if Chelsea will go back to being what they were in the 80s and early 90s now Abramovich has moved on.

They weren't considered one of the big 5 during my youth (Liverpool, Everton, Spurs, Arsenal and Man U), and I believe, even managed to be relegated one season.

They have yet to really put the kind of infrastructure, specifically the stadium, in place that can help sustain their place at the top table. Their recent largess in the transfer market probably doesn't leave them a lot of room to manoeuvre should their young signings fail to mature into the real deal.

In short, I think your unrepentant son might get something to repent about in the next decade.

Do you mean when we sent them down!?

Mrs Hap grew up as a Chelsea fan. It’s taken some time but she has seen the light and will be cheering us on.

If she suddenly appears in a full Chelsea kit and socks later, I’ll be eating my words…
