Andre Gray

Having returned to Watford a week after leaving the Jamaica squad that reached the quarter finals at the CONCACAF Gold Cup, Gray’s first port of call was to start training with the under-23s on Monday. He was then named in a strong line-up that played against Kings Langley on Tuesday evening, alongside several other players who may be leaving the club during this window, including Stipe Perica and Marc Navarro. Until the transfer window closes it’s understood that a potential suitor will be sought for Gray, who has one year remaining on his contract. Middlesbrough have shown an interest in the striker but are still assessing whether to formalise a move.

Any deal is likely to be a loan and Watford’s desire will be to have a significant proportion of Gray’s wages covered for the final 12 months, which only leaves those at the top of the Championship — in terms of budgets — as viable options. Gray would have to sanction the move himself too — he lives in Surrey with fiancee Leigh-Anne Pinnock from Little Mix, who is expecting the couple’s first child, so it’s unlikely a long-distance move would be sought.

Gray played 60 minutes against Kings Langley and scored Watford’s first goal in a 4-2 defeat, following up his own saved penalty on the rebound. Although he worked himself into some good positions he missed a trio of excellent opportunities when snatching at finishes that went either high, wide or both.

Neil Warnock makes Watford transfer admission as Middlesbrough boss eyes new signings

Xisco Munoz's Watford are busy preparing for the new Premier League season and Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock says there are a number of Horners stars who could be loaned out
Seven or eight Watford players are being made available for loans this summer.

That's according to Middlesbrough boss Neil Warnock, who has claimed he has received a list of Hornets players who could all be heading out of Vicarage Road this summer.

Watford manager Xisco Munoz is busy preparing for life in the top flight after guiding the side straight back to the Premier League at the first attempt.

The Spaniard has already overseen the temporary exits of Tiago Cukur, Adalberto Penaranda and Daniel Phillips this summer as he plans for 2021/22.

And from the sounds of it, a number of other players in the Watford squad could also be heading out as Munoz trims it down to a manageable size and reduces the wage bill.

"There will be odd loan deals when the squads come out - I’ve just got a list from Watford, there must be seven or eight players on there," he told the Hartlepool Mail.

"They want their wages off now so they’ll be somebody like that crop up."

Warnock is into his third season on Teesside, having replaced Jonathan Woodgate in June 2020 at the back end of the 2019/20 campaign.

The veteran, like Munoz, is freshening up his squad as he plots a route out of the Championship.

Warnock admitted he regularly receives lists of players who are available from agents, adding: "They say they are working for the club and they’ve been told can they help them move some players out on loan to get the wages down when they are signing all these players in the Premier League.

"There are six or seven players who have been given to me by one agent. Am I interested in any of them?

"Unfortunately I’m not, but it just shows you what is happening around the country at the minute."
