Away to Brighton in a game that finished goaless & what a signing he because, a master stroke from big Mal to bring SP to the club onloan due to an injury to Kelham O'Hanlon, as soon as he played his 1st game v Cardiff (5th November 1983) in a 2-0 home win the Boro wanted to sign him on permanently, money was really tight back then & the figures quoted were a million miles away from us paying it, he retuned for a 2nd spell just over a month later (y)

He conceded 3 in the 6 games he played

Big Mals team

Stephen Pears
Darren Wood - Ever present the whole season
Tony Mowbray
Gary Hamilton
Mick Baxter
Irving Nattrass - The only season in his Boro career, probably his whole craeer he played every minute in every game that season
Stephen Bell
Mick Kennedy
Hiene Otto
Paul Sugrue
Dave Currie

Garry Macdonald

Excellent keeper, I was hoping Ainsley would follow suit and he may well do yet.
No2 in my favourite Boro keepers

I was hoping Ainsley would do well at the Boro, it must have been hard following in the steps of a Boro legend, hopefully he has a good career in the game wherever he ends up

Excellent keeper, loved Pearsy, he is my number 3 in my personal favourite Boro keepers, after Big Jim and Skippy. He was a breath of fresh air at Boro. I must admit that I am hugely biased here in this first spell, as O’Hanlon is my least favourite ‘regular‘ keeper ever to wear the shirt (in my time) and we have had a few ‘shockers’ since I saw my first ever Boro keeper in action, the mercurial Willie Whigham.

That Boro team was much better on paper than bare results showed imho too

The best performance I ever saw was pearsy on his comeback against leicester. Best keeper in my lifetime.

I have heard from quite a few people that he was the one nobody would mess with, at the time? Seems unlikely to me but can anyone else confirm?

Pears v Campbell on loan from Arsenal, I have the entire game on video, I'll have to convert it on to DVD, or post on youtube

Lucky enough to have chatted to him a couple of times, once when he was sorting out tickets for friends and I'd popped in to get my tickets, might have been the play off game v chelsea away. He is a lovely bloke, always willing to give you the time of day, and was great with the ticket office girls.

Maybe my memory has romanticised what actually happened. :) :)
Paul Moran was the other on loan player for them that day (young lad from Spurs with his socks down)
What a game. Pears was incredible - I think he got a 10 in a few Sunday papers - he was that good.
On another day we would have been stuffed.

Pearly is my number 1 , very closely followed by Platty and even closer Skippy . Not much between them all but Stevey was my fave Boro era and he was so dependable . If the opposition somehow got past Mogga and Pally you barely gasped as he was there !
