Boro have bid accepted for Rav Van Den Berg

This guy and our other signings so far look like they’re for the development squad, don’t think we’ve signed anyone for the first team / subs bench as yet.
Other signings yes, this one, no. He's already a first team player for his side with 15 first team appearances under his belt. He hasn't given that up to sit in our U21 side, no chance.

He might not be a first choice player for us, but he'd be a first back up.

He's 19 on Friday so obviously wants a Parmo for birthday tea ! Rest of squad and staff already in Portugal aren't they so will be no seniors around Rockliffe at the signing.
I don't think its a story of we have beaten all these big clubs in the way it's being portrayed. All these big clubs have already their fill/quota of wonder kids in his position and age, so all it is is he is one they keep tabs for future possibilities IF one of theirs moves up or moves on and they have a new space to fill . None of these clubs would left him like low hanging ripe fruit for Boro to feast on IF they thought he was way above what they already have in their academies. So we were the only ones with an actual bid right now, that suited him and suited his club. Well done Boro recruitment ,let's hope he kicks on quickly.

We do need a new centre-back, so I'm happy with that, can't pretend I know anything about him though.

He’s only 18 so think he’ll be in the u21‘s initially. Good to see that we are going in this direction though, and not signing any old crap on big money, with no sell on value.

The only way we have got this lad ahead of Liverpool, Bayern etc. is because he wants to play and not be farmed out on loan without any real say. With Woody 1-to-1 coaching and Carrickball style which suits him.

So this signals the sale of McNair or Fry for me.
Or Clarke has had a set back, or is totally done maybe?

I think you're right though, we'll try and move McNair on, he's one of our top earners and although he's always been regular-ish, he's never nailed down a solid starting place where he's looked like a natural fit for me.

If he’s had some of the biggest clubs in Europe after him and played in the top division in Holland he won’t have come here to play in the U21’s.
He had 3 starts in the top tier in his intro season with about 6 meaningless subs apps in his clubs relegation season

In his next season at the top of the second tier he got 9 starts and 8 subs but ALL of that was up to end of Jan. Since the end of Jan I find it interesting that he's just been on the bench , without any injury record. He last played a meaningful game on 6th Jan,, then that's it dropped to the bench like a stone for 20 games. There is development needed here and we are in a good place to give him that. I'm now interested to know the fee so hopefully that will come out this week.

When a player that young makes his debut and starts a run of games, it's usually because a more senior player is injured.

Sam Kersten was an established starting CB for them, and missed a year with a knee injury.
His return to fitness coincided with Van Den Berg dropping back to the bench.

Yes I'd have to agree but also another knee injury to Thomas Beelen another of their 3 regular CB's of 10 games seems to have given our new lad his chances/starts in the season just gone

In my view Beelen looked first choice CB from the bench but to cover 2 CB injuries overlapping when you play 3 at the back, they have had to make use of VD Berg for those 10 games

Most young players get their chance due to injuries or suspensions. That's hardly something to be concerned about. Most players that get their chance don't take it. The ones that do you might be worth paying attention to.

Looks like back up to the first team. With Matt Clarke seemingly incapacitated it looks like a good move for the right price. We do have more important positions to fill but it's a good start.

Looking at Chuba, Crooks and Forss last year, Micheal Carrick will probably play him centre forward!
